..besides .8 inch between 80mm and 100mm? Do you really notice a anything on cross country terrain?

you will notice. But then again, it will help you ride faster, so you may not notice.

The comparison might be minor on smooth fireroad type terrain, but for trail riding, I think it comes down to you want as much travel as possible in a light weight package as possible. If given the choice between 80-100, go 100, you'll love the extra extra 1" and guarantee you'll use it at some point.
