OK - let's try this again.

I have a 2000 Marzocchi (sp?) Z1 QR20 and I just bought a 2002 Norco Torrent Hardtail. Very excited. Until I realize that the steerer tube on my z1 has been cut too short (it was on another bike - a few actually) ... anyway, it's about an inch too short.

Is that it? Am I done? Can a steerer tube be replaced? If so, how and where? Will it be expensive? (Do I now have a legit excuse to buy a whole new shock?)

The steerer tube appears to be pressed in - there are on bolts or anything where it goes into the crown.

Any help would be appreciated.

Send it to Marzocchi. They can do the replacment for about $50.

Thanks! Does it have to go back to Marz ... or can my LBS do it?

pressing in a new steerer isn't something a LBS is equipped to deal with.
CALL them to send it back (they aren't swift at responding to email). they have a decent turn around time though.

I did just that ... I called Marzocchi USA - the transfered me immediately to a tech guy (who was awsome) ... he explained how it works etc. and hooked me up with the local Marz. shop (which is Norco here in BC, Canada) ... I drove it down there the same day (with the help of my LBS who gave me an RA number) and they did it for me in 15 minutes - price? SIX BEER.

Talk about swift, excellant service! Probelm solved.

BTW - I also too it to a local machine shop (a brake and muffler place), they tried their press but couldn't even get the old tube out (even with 1000 lbs of force). The Marz tech laughed (kindly) when I told him that story and said that the tube won't even budge until you reach nearly 6 TONS of force! Wow. Guess those steer tubes aren't likely to just pop out on the trail!
