| Such thing as after-market "Fox Forx Vanilla 100 R"??? | PiroChu Oct 13, 2003 7:16 AM | | I can't seem to find it on Fox website, either.
I see lots of "125 RL", "125 RLC", etc., but I specifically don't see "Vanilla 100 R" (or "Float 100 R" for that matter), as an "after market" part.
The only few times I see it is when it's on a complete bike (as an "OEM" part), or as a part of a "build kit".
Am I missing something here??? |

The only diff is that the spacers in the fork reflect different travel settings. When you decide to buy tell the retailer to set the travel for you @ 100mm. |
| re: Such thing as after-market "Fox Forx Vanilla 100 R" | Mikey Oct 13, 2003 8:45 AM | | The Float 100s are only available as RLC in the aftermarket, but OEMs can get Rs and RLs.
Looks like the Vanilla is available in all versions at Mountain High Cyclery. |
| Oh, I see, but still confused a bit... (some more Q's) | PiroChu Oct 13, 2003 10:28 AM | | Thanks, you guys, for the tip. That explains it...
I also went through the manual posted online (PDF file) on Fox website.
With that in mind, I have some more questions, please...
* So, technically-speaking, the weight is the same among 80mm/100mm/125mm, correct (since all 2 spacers are inside the fork, just at different places)?
* Does the exposed length of upper tube remain constant among 80mm/100mm/125mm setup's, while with a different hight of bottom-out point (in relation up to the crown)?
Or does the exposed length of upper tube changes per travel setup, while with the same bottom-out point (in relation up to the crown)?
(still confused)
* Since the fork is the same among 80mm/100mm/125mm (only adjusted by spacers), does the head angle change per the travel setup, or is it always the same among the 3 setup's? (This is related to the question above.)
* When ordering online, can both travel & spring-weight be specified? Does it depend on the ship/site? Or, is this something I do at home myself (which is fine)?
The manual (below) says that "green" springs come standard on 100mm fork, while "blue" on 125mm fork. I thought the forks are the same, so I'm a bit confused on this part. I'm 150lbs, so I guess I need "blue" (130~155lbs) for 100mm setup, and "purple" (115~155lbs) if I ever want 125mm. So, I should buy 125mm fork stocked with "blue", then go down to 100mm myself, rather than order 100mm stocked with "green" then change springs, huh? (still confused)
* Finally, has anyone used Mountain High Cyclery? Are they responsible/respectable?
Thanks!

| Oh, I see, but still confused a bit... (some more Q's) | S-Works Oct 13, 2003 11:49 AM | | Larry, the one man show at Mtn High is bar none, the best. It service, price, guarantees everything he sells. I've personally bought three forks from him. He's in Loveland CO, about 20 mins. north of me. He can answer all your questions. He's at Interbike until wed.
Got the new ride yet? Looking forward to seeing it.

| Oh, I see, but still confused a bit... (some more Q's) | Jrm Oct 13, 2003 12:05 PM | | The weight stays the same in the 125 and 100 mode but when you leave out a spacer in the 80mm mode you may lose a coupla grams.
When you adjust the travel on the fork by moving the spacer you are changing the lenght of the forks extension and compression proportionally. Look at the spring/spacer diagram in the manual, see how when you change travel your adding/removing lenght to the compression and bottom out spring/spacer stack?
The head tube angle changes a degree with every 3/4"s of an inch you either add or emove from the forks crown to dropout lenght.
The forks are the same but their spring rate changes when the travel is adjusted via moving the spacers. When you buy the fork it will come with a set of springs consisting of single yellow, green and purple springs.
larry @ mountain high is great to work with. Thats where i bought my vanilla and my talas. |
| Does Fox voids warranty if I mount a 185mm rotor? | PiroChu Oct 14, 2003 3:46 AM | |
I've read here before that Fox voids warranty on a Fox Forx if a big (bigger) disc rotor is mounted.
I just don't remember whether or not a 185mm rotor (for '02 Avid mechanical disc brake) makes the cut... |
| From the 2004 Fox Manual... | Metroid Oct 14, 2003 7:01 AM | | You could call them to see if 5mm is a big deal, 1 800 FOXSHOX. Personally, I think you would be fine.
Disc Brakes
Disc brakes with 160-180mm rotors can be used on FOX FORX. Do not use DH rotors larger than 180mm. Install disc brakes and torque all fasteners according to manufacturer's recommendations. Install, route and check that all cables or hydraulic hoses are securely fastened to the lower leg and will not move during compression of the fork. It is recommended that new disc brake pads be installed to ensure proper alignment and to minimize drag. Test brakes for proper operation on flat land.

| 5mm? Wow, that's tricky. I'd better ask, thanks. (NM) | PiroChu Oct 14, 2003 4:38 PM | | |
| Just called Fox, and they told me "NO" warranty on 185mm... (How about Marzocchi?) | PiroChu Oct 15, 2003 1:03 PM | |
Just called Fox per the 800# above, and they told me that warranty will be voided on a 185mm rotor. I guess they really just mean a 6"-range rotor (namely 160mm), because a 185mm rotor is more like in a 7"-range.
Does anybody know if Marzocchi Marathon S (dual coil, 105mm) will still be warrantied with a 185mm rotor???
Though I was attracted to 32mm legs of Vanilla (as opposed to the regular 30mm legs of Marzocchi), I'll have to step back & re-think about this before I put down my money...

I bought my 'nilla 125RLC from him and he set it up perfect for me. He will also get you the best deal around. I highly recommend giving him a call when he returns from interbike. |
