Fox Vanilla 100R or Marz MX COMP ETA(10 posts)

Fox Vanilla 100R or Marz MX COMP ETAMetallica1999

Help! I need a new fork. My current fork, 2001 Manitou Mars will not hold air and I'd hate to invest in old technology. So, I'm pretty sure I'd like a coil fork this time around. I ride aggressive east-coast cross country.

I was thinking about picking up and 2004 Fox Vanilla 100R or a Marz MX Comp ETA.

I can get either of these forks for about $300. Any opinions on either?

I have a 105 mm 03 MX Comp w/o ETA and 120mm 04 MX Pro w/ETA. I like both and think the Pro with ETA is really sweet. ETA makes so much sense, and I do feel the performance is better on the 120mm 04 MX Pro w/ETA. I can't say how much is due to SSVF vs SSV or the extra 15mm. Look at the price and weight of the MX Pro w/ETA compared to a Vanilla RL or RLC and it becomes even more of a winner. The only other opinions I'd put out are that you do not see many complaints about clunks or service turn around with Marzocchi, and that (again) ETA can be really grand at times.
MX COMP ETAFM or MF

ETA rocks! I have a MX pro eta on my hardtail and a Z-1 FR on my duallie.

I will never buy another fork without ETA.

Excellent thread, I'm in the same boat. Aggressive XC and my choice is between the vanilla 125 and MX Comp w/eta.
I'd look at the MX Pro but it doesn't seem to come in 120mm travel. I'm leaning towards the marzocchi FWIW.

marathon S 120FM or MF?

The only difference is the crown and the price really... sweet fork
The main difference is the damping systemetal

Which is much better in the marathon then in the mx forks. The marathon damping system is like the one the vanilla uses. The mx forks have much simpler damping systems.

well, im a huge marzocchi fan. but a fellow mechanic i work with just bought a vanilla and i must say im very impressed. first it has like 7 adjustments(mind you, not ETA), second there is absolutely no stiction whatsoever. ive ridden a few marz who had very little stiction and felt great, but the fox has literally NO stiction which for me is a big plus.

that said, im riding a z1 and have no desire to upgrade or change any time soon.

Okay, let's throw one more fork into the mix. Supergo has the 2003 Marz Marathon S for $320. Is it worth the extra $20?

Yeah, I saw the SuperGo price on Marathon last night, too! I was thinking of buy a Vanilla R, but now I want to hear more feedback first.

Now that '03 Vanilla R (set as 100mm, in my case) & '03 Marathon S 105mm w/ ETA are about the same prices around $320, it's now harder to pick one.
The main difference is this: Marathon has ETA but it's with 30mm legs, while Vanilla R is with 32mm legs but without external travel-adjuster. I suppose the weight is roughly in the same range?
I still think maybe Vanilla is for me, because I don't like to fiddle with any settings during a ride (set it right the first time, and that's it), so ETA won't appeal as much as 32mm legs.

Hummm... Choices, choices...

PS.
Looking at SuperGo site, is Talas the only Fox Forx that I can have an option of no V-brake studs? How about Vanilla? Can I get it for disc-only?

I'm spec'ing the disc-only Vanilla RL from a frame builder to go with the bike. As far as I know, that's the only way to get a fork from Fox
i without
the brake posts. It's ordered through their "OEM" division, not the traditional consumer outlets. So if you know a builder, check with him.
