1" fork or so(4 posts)

1" fork or somolo
Oct 15, 2003 12:47 PM
My frame takes forks with a 1 inch diameter of the post (is that the name of it?)
If I buy a new fork, is it possible to replace the post with one that has a diameter of 1" and, when ever I get a new frame with 1,1/8 inch, put it back on?

If so, do I need to replace my current threaded head set, is it even possible to do that?

Basically, is it possible for me to buy a new fork to put on my bike (1") that I can use on a new frame (1,1/8") later?
yes, but...logbiter

You can still get forks from marzocchi with 1" steerer tubes. Only the forks with 80mm of travel.
Now, if you get a frame with 1 1/8" later and still want to use the fork with 1" steerer you can get chris king "devolution" headset, which will allow you to do this. Not a cheap headset, but you will never need a new one... I believe you can get threaded or threadless with these and am not aware of any other headsets which allow you to do this.
If you're getting a new fork, you could go with either the current threaded headset or install a new threadless headset...which would then require you getting a new stem.

Another BIG thing to consider is how old is your frame and will the handling change significantly with a 80mm fork??
Depending on your bike, it may not even be designed for a suspension fork or designed for one with 50-65mm of travel (ie pre-'95ish.)
*a side note- you can find new old stock 1" forks at some online retailers or used 1" foks on ebay and the classifieds here... but getting a used fork opens a whole 'nother can of worms...*

It may be a wiser investment to save a while longer for a new frame/bike and open yourself up to getting any fork you desire at the time, since technology is always changing and getting better.

post more specific questions if you so desire and provide more info on your frame, intended use, future plans, etc.

good luck,
Serge (having a slow morning at work so far)

Hmmm, I bought a CK Devolution head set to reduce my 1 1/4" headset down to 1 1/8", not 1 1/8" to 1". Maybe they make both? But I do agree with Logbiter that you may be throwing good money into a bike that won't make you happy. I agree that the geometry is unlikely to be correct with an 80mm fork. I don't know your money situation, but a Devolution head set is $100, and a decent fork is $250. That's a good start on a new frame. Have you checked on line?
