Hi guys on my new bike the 03 Rock shox Pilot Sl will not comppress on the intial press down on the handle bar. You have t push down 1-2 time hard, then the next push the shock will compress and act normally. I've never delt with an Air fork before, and I know they need some break in period but this just dosn't seem normal.
probably stiction and needs breakin time tooderby

For a butterier fork action I wipe a little fork oil around the exposed stansions every once in a while to condition the wiper seals that never get much oil from the inside. Air forks pressure the inside oil seals even more tightly to the stansions and the wiper seals stay really dry. Try wiping oil on the stansions it will really help, especially when new. Some people use silicon spray, but I find the fork oil lasts longer and doesn't really collect more dust (which doesn't cause any problem anyway).

The initial fork action problem is probably due to the dry seals and the new very soft air pressured seals on most air forks really push oil away and stick to the stansions when sitting for a day or two.

Are you the guy on the new NRS I talked to on Tamarancho Thursday? He was complaining of the same thing with his new Pilot fork.

I jsut got back from a 2 hour ride, MAN I'm out of shape it's been over a year since I last rode a mountaint bike and about 4 months since I rode a road bike. I out a little silicone oil around the seals as the exposed part of the legs were bone dry. I think it just needed breaking in as it's been 40min since I got back and the bike is sitting there and it will compress on the first push. But Now I need to go buy a pump for the rear shock as I let to much air out when trying to set the sag, and bottomed out a couple times. I just got the bike in the mail as I had to buy it online As there were no Marin Dealerships within a 3 hour radiuse of my house(called everysingle one listed and either they just started carring the line or stopped a year ago.) But so Far I love the bike. It feels good to get riding again. Now I just need to ride every day Like I did so My legs don't burn so crazy on the climbs.
Dealt with something similar with a SID Race last yearDave K

It would essentially sieze until it got a good sized hit. Once it compressed once, it would be fine. It would work really quite well. Fairly plush and smooth. However, once it sat for 5 minutes, it would be seized again. Very strange. I had a mechanic at Rocky Mountain tear it apart, but to no avail. It was sent back to Rock Shox for replacement. If you're fork is exhibiting the same behavior, get it looked at. This is definately not normal (air forks may be somewhat "sticky" during their break-in period, but they should still compress). If your LBS cannot fix it have it warrantied. Good luck.
