| Atom 100 T.Q. | jaco Jan 11, 2004 2:23 PM | | Hello there, Im really going bananas with my Marz Atom 100. I realized i no longer know anything about adjusting the knobs on this fork to make it work right. Im 185lbs and would like advice on how to get the fork to smooth out stuff, it feels really stiff. Regarding the left side knob, as far as i know i should start all the way counterclockwise and then go as far as 4 clicks? How much is a click? Half turn, a whole turn? These knobs dont "click". Regarding the knob on the right side am i supposed to start all the way clock or counter clock wise? How many clicks approx should i go on this side? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jaco |

spring pre-load. These adjust "sag" Turn them both
all the way counter clockwise to start. See how it feels
and then start playing with the sag. Rule of thumb for
this for is about 1 inch of sag. This means when you are
sitting on the bike the fork should settle about an inch.
There is a spring in each leg, so two adjusters. Adjust
them the same amount, such as two turns in on both sides.
On the right leg there is a skinny knob with a screw slot
in it. This is the rebound adjuster. This adjusts how fast
the fork returns after being compressed, as in when hitting
a bump. Screw it all the way out clock wise and compress and
release the fork, and it should bounce right back up. Turn
the screw in a couple turns and do it again and it should
rise more slowly. A good place to start is pushing down on
the bars and adjusting the rebound so that the fork returns
about as fast as you can raise your hands. With light rebound
the bars will push your hands up, with heavy rebound the bars
won't keep up with yourn hands. After you have a starting point,
find a ripply piece of trail and ride along it. Too little rebound
will make the front end feel a bit shaky and loose. Fiddle with it
until it just feels "right" for you. Too much will slow down the
fork so much the front will hardly react to the bumps.
My atom took a long time to break in and get nice and plush, and
I personally find that it rides better with very little preload
(lots of sag)but that is just my opinion.
The lever on the left leg is the ecc lock down. Turn it as far as
it will go clockwise (I think) and push down hard on the handlebars
and the fork should lock most of the way through its travel. This
is for climbing steep hills, and this locks out the fork, so there
is, for all practical purposes, zero travel. Turning the lever back
the other way should allow the fork to spring back to its normal
height. Do not confuse the ecc on the left leg with rebound on the
right, ecc is an on/off switch, the rebound adjuster is just that,
a variable adjustment.
