| Clydesdale fork recommendations. Any thoughts?? | mikeyjunior Jan 12, 2004 8:48 AM | | I'm looking for any thoughts or recommendations on fork for my new hardtail. Current stats: 6', 230#, riding mostly wisconsin glacial terrain. Fire roads, tight singletrack, couple of races per year. No hucking or freeride. 2-3ft drops pretty much the maximum that I would do. Current fork: 2002 Duke C 100mm. While I love the simplicity of this fork, and its never given me any problems, it just won't jive on my new ride. The new frame is designed around an 80mm travel fork being optimum. If I could afford a Fox I wouldn't be asking for input. I just blew everything I had on a titanium frame.
I have been eying up an '03 Manitou Black Elite. However, I would have to change out the springs for extra firm, and I've heard they're a bit hard to come by.
So, any thought or recommendations on what else I should be looking at? Price is a factor given the amount I just dropped on the frame.
Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

| what about a 'zoke? | logbiter Jan 12, 2004 9:44 AM | | Have you checked out Marzocchi marathon or MX series?
You can pick up a 2003 for decent prices now as well.
From what I understand the Black's aren't nearly as good (stiffness-wise) as a marzocchi (or fox) for clyde's like us.
I'm in at about your size (close to 240 until a couple months ago.. now ~210) and am still riding a couple of '99 z2 bombers, which I love!
At your weight I'd tend to go more for an MX comp or pro for plushness, over a bit lighter marathon.
good luck,

| re: Clydesdale fork recommendations. Any thoughts?? | CORTINA RIDER Jan 12, 2004 6:03 PM | | I just got a Marzocchi DJ1 and Love it! 6'1" 235 lbs and can't bottom it out with stock setup. Only problem is 20mm front axle. Other than that I love the DJ series. The only other fork I ride is the Sherman line. The reason I went with a zock is the price. The dj1 is being blown out by Jensonusa for $309. I hate the bast--ds at Jesnon but Supergo matched the price. Unreal for the price. Hope this helps! |

Any thoughts?? | gtslaton Jan 16, 2004 10:26 AM | | I run around 220lbs and have a Manitou Axel Super (w/ the TPC damping) w/extra frim springs and a Rock Shox Psylo also w/ extra firm springs. I bottom both out taking a 3-5 foot drops. SO -- I would be hesitant to recommend a spring fork for either the Manitous or Rock Shoxs. Personally, I am looking at replacing the Psylo (on a '03 Liquid) with a Marzocchi Z1 SL. My experience with a air shock (on the back of my Liquid) has led me to the conclusion that you can always add more air -- but if the spring doesn't hold, you are out of luck.
