04 Marathon coil vs 04 Z1 coilCSPRINGS

Anyone with personal long term experience with these two similar forks on a single bike? I need informed input to make my decision.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Both are great forks, but there are big differences between the two in weight, axle-crown height, and stiffness. The Z1 is roughly 1" taller, so it's going to slacken your head angle about 1 deg vs. the Marathon. It's also much stiffer/stronger, and 1.5lb heavier. The buttery smooth ride of the Z1 will blow your mind though, even though they use the same damping the stiffness and heft of the Z1 make it feel smoother. If you're riding some burly stuff, doing drops, and/or just don't mind the extra weight then get the Z1. If you're riding a bike designed around a normal 4-5" fork and don't want to change the geometry much, and/or your riding is more XC than FR oriented then the Marathon would be great.

The weight diff according to Marz guys is .80 lbs. The axle to crown Z1 is 1.6 inches taller. I dont do more than 3 footers on my 03 Enduro Pro with Fox Coil over 2.25 stroke yielding about 5.5 to 6 total travel. Currently Marz 02 MXC AIR 100mm front fork. Just dont seem like enough travel and rides like the old air rear shock (not plush, and unable to truely use total travel ). The stock Fox Air setup is an abomination to the Enduro. THe bike is TONS better with Coil over. THe weight factor is non issue for the rear. I weigh 160 and usu ride 3 hrs after work and all day rides on weekends when possible. So My pack is usu 100 oz plus tools and clothes, and granola and fruit stuffs.

Head angle effect, total travel, ride quality and weight are concerns since I have not had the fortune to demo both forks. Marzocchi techies say the 2 forks wil ride the same, all other things equal since they are essentially the same designs and HSVF dampening cartridges.

Thanks for the input Larry and I will keep watching the posts.

I'm presuming 120?

I own both a Z1 FR and a 105mm MX pro-eta. ALso I have a bunch of friends who have upgraded enduros to Z-1's and like it quite a bit. It will raise your BB which is generally considered a good thing for Spesh frames.

I think it really comes down to where you see yourself going as a rider. 3' drops now, but do you plan on going bigger? If so, get the Z-1 for sure. What about what kinds of bikes do your friends ride?

Personally I've abandonded weight altogether, since most of my friends are riding heavier bikes than I own, and climbing is not my weakness anyways. So I can afford to add a few pounds to my bike and not really suffer on group rides even if it slows me down a bit going uphill.

This is about you, not me- but I think you see where I'm going. Generally, I think people can buy gear that will either compensate for their weaknesses as riders, or accentuate their skills, but rarely both... so the real question is, would you rather the climbing get easier, or the downhill.

Having said all that, I would go for the Z-1.... I don't notice the weight and it's nice to have something extra-burly! oh yeah, I like that extra A-to-C length too, makes for a slacker head angle which is mighty nice for high-speed, long travel moments...

Steel stanchions on the 04' is the other big change. That added quite a bit of weight, the new fork is .6-.7lbs heavier than the 03' (5.3 vs 6lbs).

Where did you get that info? It seems alot of the marzocchi info it wrong early this year. The internet is flooded with strange info.

Only the Z150 coil and all DJ's have steel stantions. And only the DJ's have steel steerers.

Notice, the DJ says the stantions are alloy. Even Marzocchi can't give out the right info it seems!

Hmmm, you could be right. I found an earlier post where Brian P said that the Z1 line all used aluminum. There's definitely a lot of conflicting info. The other confusing thing is, if the stanchions are still aluminum like the 03', then where in the hell did they add almost 3/4lb of weight over the 03'? It doesn't seem like there are enough changes elsewhere to add up to that much, but maybe so.

04's also have 2.7" tire clearance vs. 2.4" on the 03's
