When to go 20mm?(3 posts)

When to go 20mm?keen

Is there a point @ which a standard QR isn't good enough? Or is the 20mm used for ridgity? Reason I ask is I will be purchasing a new fork for agressive XC riding and wonder if I will benefit from a 20mm set-up. I don't mind a little extra weight. Thanx

Last season I had the same question as I was looking to build up an '03 Heckler for aggressive xc / light freeriding. I had never owned a thru axel in my 10 years of riding but I reasoned since I was more concerned with stiffness instead of weight I'd give it a go. (I weigh 180# plus gear.) Since installing a Z1 FR QR20 I've not looked back. I'm extremely happy with the added stiffness with the thru axel.

IMO most _trail_ riders probably wouldn't be able to justify the extra weight of such a fork. Some lighter riders (and riders with alot of finesse) can also get enough stiffness out of a standard fork on the rough stuff. But, if your looking to push your limits on the rougher trails a thru axel would certainly help.

(They best way to get the most bang for your buck to allow you to beef up you ride is by going with bigger tires.)

Thanks for the info. I have an 02'Z1 freeride that I will change out the lowers for a QR 20 set-up. I will be replacing my QR Sun Singletrack w/ a 20mm Bombshell FatBoy wheel. Extra weight but really burly. My Enduro is becoming a tank.
