| When to go 20mm? | keen Jan 14, 2004 5:01 PM | | Is there a point @ which a standard QR isn't good enough? Or is the 20mm used for ridgity? Reason I ask is I will be purchasing a new fork for agressive XC riding and wonder if I will benefit from a 20mm set-up. I don't mind a little extra weight. Thanx |
| re: When to go 20mm? | Mikerj Jan 15, 2004 6:12 PM | | Last season I had the same question as I was looking to build up an '03 Heckler for aggressive xc / light freeriding. I had never owned a thru axel in my 10 years of riding but I reasoned since I was more concerned with stiffness instead of weight I'd give it a go. (I weigh 180# plus gear.) Since installing a Z1 FR QR20 I've not looked back. I'm extremely happy with the added stiffness with the thru axel.
IMO most _trail_ riders probably wouldn't be able to justify the extra weight of such a fork. Some lighter riders (and riders with alot of finesse) can also get enough stiffness out of a standard fork on the rough stuff. But, if your looking to push your limits on the rougher trails a thru axel would certainly help.
(They best way to get the most bang for your buck to allow you to beef up you ride is by going with bigger tires.)
