Everybody says their shock or fram design is Anti-Bob. Fact or fiction? How much is the shock and how much is the frame design?
(SPV, 5th element, fox, Specialized Epic, Giant NRS etc..)

I'm looking into a light cross country bike and confused by all the marketing gimmick.

Don't get too hung up on the anti-bob thing. There is always a tradeoff between a completely bob-free suspension design and reaction to small bumps. Today's suspension designs are very efficient, even if they have a tiny amount of bob.

I can confirm first hand that the NRS no-bob works, but I got rid of it after a year for that very reason. By all accounts the Epic does exactly what it claims to, but read up on some of the past posts (or better yet demo one) to see if it's for you. The new SPV shocks work to varying degrees, but again, they're not going to feel as "giving" as a conventional shock.
bob has more to do with spin technique than frame or shock...timmy

design. Unless you get a shock with complete lockout (which I wouldn't suggest), your shock is going to move. Some call that bob...I call it poor spin technique. For cross country riding you want the shock to move a little to smooth out rough climbs. If the bike is wallowing then it needs a stiffer setting. SPIN is the key!

Contact me at my email address and I will let you in a little known secret about frames and shocks, relative to pedal induced bob or, in actual description, Inefficient Design Values.

There is a frame made that is 100% BOB-FREE and it is 3.5" of travel that weighs less than the FUEL 100's carbon frame and it tough enough for light-medium free ride but, it is a full XC-R -FRO- frame design that is light years ahead of EVERYTHING out there.

It IS THE FRAME that is CRUTIAL TO OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE IN HANDLING ENERGY TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE RIDER'S OUTPUT TO THE TERRAIN -through the frame- AND, TO HANDLE THE KENETIC FEEDBACK FROM THE TERRAIN BACK TO THE RIDER -through the frame- the bike's main transmission pathway.

There is a frame that is made, although ecxceedingly difficult to get one, that rides out like a hardtail and takes hits and radical transfers like it is on a cushion of air and without a smidge of energy loss or hesitation of forward movement; No Energy Losses!!!
No, it is not a Soft Tail, although a soft tail's effeciency would come close to being able to describe the physical performance values of this frame's 3.5" of full suspension travel efficiency; but not 100% though.
These frames are as efficient as hardtails or the STPs by Trek or YBBs by Moots ... with the addition of 3.5" of rear travel that has NO NEED FOR LOCK-OUT featured shocks, and, TWO shock eye posistion to reset BB Heights and Head Angles for any terrain conditions to race on.

Yes ... they are as bad as I have just described them to be (honestly)
