Im 41, 5'8, 190lbs. Im not to happy about this either. I ride to work as much as i can given the weather here in No. Cal. But even if i do 3 times in the week i gain muscle but lose no weight. From reading about my body type my chance of having a high muscle to fat percentage is more likely then me losing weight.

Should i focus on more upper/lower muscle instead of being so consumed with losing weight. Its hard especially when pete's wicked ale is on sale at the market or i look at myself neeked. Any other Endomorph's have any pointers or words of wisdom?

I've personally never met a true vegan that wasn't pencil thin. Maybe they're out there, but I've never come across one.

I was serious in my reply. Proper diet is important. There's no special secret to weight loss. It's eat less and exercise more. Plain and simple. Vegan diets can help one lose weight. I meant that and it's true. I'm not making fun of you.

Take a close look at what you eat and when you eat it plus how much exercise you get for a given period. Keep a journal of your daily habbits for a week or two. It will be very telling. I'm sure if you do this it won't be difficult to find areas where you can impove.

(And what's with that second sentence? It doesn't even make sense.)

If you're up for it post your journal or email it to me and I'll have my wife look it over. She was a dietician for a while (until she realized there's better money elsewhere).

You know ive changed my eating habit's alot. But its those wicked ales, ESB's, Pales and blonds that seem to kill any effort i make on the eating side. I miss read your vegan comment as derogatory when i first read it. I've had that kinda response in the past, when i posted subjects simular to this one.

Ive though about consulting a dietician but i know exactly what they'd say..cut the beer comsumption down or cut it out completely. Im just not ready to do that. or the next worst thing....light beer..yikes..

I'm a Harpoon IPA addict myself.

I'm trying to swith to Amstel Light. They don't taste that light, and they have far less calories than other beers, including the typical 'light' beers.

A VEGAN DIET WILL NOT NECESSARILY MAKE YOU THIN! Proper nutrition and the right amount of calories for your height weight and amount of exercise will!

I am a vegan and I have lots of vegan friends. Some of my non-athletic vegan friends are plenty overweight. I race bikes and am a slightly over-fat vegan at this point in the season. I am 15-17% bodyfat and need to be at 12% to race well. In my opinion it is easy to put on weight as a vegan because of eatting so many carbs you have to plan ahead and pack food to eat vegan protien 95% of the time...but dairy and animal free carbs are much easier to find. I have personally probably gained 10lbs over the past winter on peanut butter and bread alone!

I think i should probably work on strenghtening my muscle to fat ratio, insterad of being hell bent on thinning up. heck even when i did race the lightest i got was 190lbs.

I am close to your age and size and I also can not realistically ride my way to weight reduction given time constraints and etc. I have come to the realization that it is going to take a change in eating habits and self discipline to slim up. One thing I am changing is how eat during, pre, and post ride. Based on what I have read here I am probably needlessly consuming energy bars on rides that are under 2 hours.

Unless you experience some kind of psychic spiritual bond with the herd cattle you see wallowing in their own fecal matter when you pass through Norco, I'd steer clear of the whole vegan thing. Although a vegan diet is infinitely better for you than eating at Taco Bell every day, it still, nevertheless, has some serious dietary pitfalls. People become vegans for philosophical and ethical reasons, usually not for health related ones.

For starters, as MAII pointed out, vegetarian diets and vegan diets are weighted pretty heavily on the carbohydrate end. You can't eat animal products, which happen to be the best (i.e., easily obtained) sources of complete proteins, so most veggies overindulge on bagels, bread, and the obligatory granola. High carb diets tend to get a lot of their calories stored as fat, and besides, you're an athlete...you need protein. It's possible for practicing vegans to get protein, but they have to be a lot more disciplined and knowledgeable about which bean has what amino acid and combining foods to get a complete protein, etc,.

Also, there is no possible way to get vitamin B12 without ingesting animal products, uh uh, can't be done, not ever...not without popping a vitamin pill anyway. Although people seem to get by without it, chronic vitamin deficiency just doesn't seem really smart to me. Then there's iron. Women especially (women athletes even more so) have to be concerned about anemia when on a vegan diet. Good old red meat's the best source of this mineral. I could go on about calcium, but my rant's kind of running out of steam. Suffice it to say, you'd have to eat about six cups of raw broccoli to get the calcium in a glass of milk. Good luck on that one.

But the most important reason why you shouldn't take of veganism is pleasure. Veggie food, and I can't emphasize this enough, SUCKS!!!
I love food, I love to cook, and I love preparing tasty and healthful meals. Judging by your good taste in ales, I'd say you were a gastronome as well (tried some Saxer Bock from Oregon last night....deeeelicious). Don't be a miserable ascetic. Use common sense to cut out fat, eat wholesome foods, don't eat till you're stuffed, and exercise more. This country is the fattest nation on earth because we don't exercise enough and we eat way to much cruddy meat based fast food. That doesn't mean you ought to go to the opposite extreme. Just looking at that Moby guy without his shirt and all pallid and pasty looking makes me want to chow down on a good porterhouse.

the calcium in the brocolli is much more easily absorbed and used by the body then the calcium in milk. And you can get B12 from some many sources...I use Floridex ( can find it in health food stores ).

undoubtedly there are arguements on both sides and neither diet is the perfect one for sure. Everyone thrives on something different and chooses their nutrition path based on many factors. Vegans are vegans for many reasons and people choose to eat death things for just as many reason I assume.

The important thing regardless of whether it is "The Zone" , a vegan diet or whatever is that you educate yourself and really make sure you are eating right.

I've come to realize you have to do three things to really lose weight (especially if you are over 30): 1. drink primarily only water (no soda, beer, sugary juices, etc) 2. do a shitload of cardio...I've cranked my cardio up to 1 - 1.5 hours 4 or 5 times a week, with a combo of SPIN and treadmill usage, and finally 3. clean up your diet...drop mayonaise for honey mustard, drop the cheese, chips, doritos, beer, sausage and eggs, 3 bowls of cereal at 10 pm before you go to bed.

It takes a lifestyle change to get results. I've gone from 222 lbs to 205 in the last 3 months, with a goal of hitting 190 lbs by mid-May. You'll get there.
