| Getting Passed | Steve Sep 10, 2001 3:17 AM | | For my next event I will be racing for the first time in the expert classification, only because of my advanced age (55) and the fact that they make us old guys race 4 laps verses the 6 laps everybody else has to do. I expect to be passed (lapped actually) several times by truly great riders at the pro level; (Tinker, Tilford, Sheppard). I consider it an honor to be going to the start line with these guys.
Here's my question: What's the proper way to get passed, the last thing, and I mean the last thing I want to do is get in these guy's way!! So help me do the right thing . I know there are some great racers on this board, let know how you would like the slower rider in front of you to react when you pass them. |

if you're much slower (and you will hear it) let him know you aware of him and you will let him in as soon as trail permits.
when see safe place yell: "pulling out /right/left/ pass".
If there's no place for safe pass pull out and let the guy go.
If you are slower but not by much don't bother this is race for God sake |
| re: Getting Passed | trail bum Nov 8, 2001 7:47 AM | | I would expect that if a faster rider came up behind me and wanted to get by, they would say something. If I knew they were not in my class
I would let them pass (without putting myself into trouble). If they were in my class, well then they would have to find their own way around. I don't mean to block the faster rider, but I'm not going to help the his position. |
| re: Getting Passed | Bartman Jan 4, 2002 12:42 PM | | I've found that most people around here (Wisconsin) agree that it is the 'passer's' responsibility to alert the slower rider of their prescence. I always use "on your left/right!". If you hear them coming and are nice enough to give them a lane, then fine. But if your immersed in your own race and don't give them much thought, don't worry, part of a race is finding lines and passing slower riders. I was in a tight race once and actually used a slower rider to my advantage. I was fighting this guy all race, and I knew it would come down to the end. With about 1/2 mile we were aproaching a slower rider who was running out of gas, and I knew there was a little single track before the end, so I held off passing the slower rider right until the beginning of the single track, and barely squeezed by, the guy I was fighting with had no time to react, and I ended up gaining a good 15 seconds in the singletrack because he was hopelessly stuck behind the slower rider. So who cares if it's Tinker Juarez or next-door Joe ride your race and leave passing you up to them. |
