Which HRM to buy?(8 posts)

Which HRM to buy?Murray
Feb 13, 2002 9:45 AM
Hi Folks,

Shopping for a heart rate monitor, I have it narrowed to either the Timex product or the Nike product. I previously tried a Sports Instruments HRM but found the signal was crap in the city, so it went back.
Does anyone here have enlightening experience to share?

Send me your Sports instruments one- I'll buy it. I need cheap stuff because somehow I always wreck them. Either I break the watchband part or drop the "watch" part on the concrete or (my latest) have my backpack stolen with the chest strap.

I have the Target and it works fine. Nothing too fancy but it does beep when you get above or below the targets you've set. On my singletrack rides I end up with the damn thing beeping most of the time because I'm above my LT that I have it set for. It can be helpful for the trainer though.

I have a cardiosport graph X. It work fine. I ride along electric lines and the flight path of SFO airport. It also works with my polar band. One of polar watches broke and other watch I lost. I don't recommend polar because of the hassle with battery life and repairs. The tranmitter is costly to replace. Performance bike has a couple of HRM for sale. Check out the reviews on this web site.

Just got one from Performance, right now they're 70 bucks on sale. IMO much better than Polar as far as price goes. Polar is way overpriced, and when the transmitter battery dies... oops! Gotta buy a new transmitter!

Just make sure the sensor (the thingy that goes around your chest) has a replaceable battery. I know the $50 Polar one doesn't.
