| Re: Check Mike T.'s FAQ... | Echo Feb 19, 2002 1:05 PM | | That's some of the best advice I've seen. Having fun is what its all about.
Unless your riding buddies race, the problem you have is that you have no idea how you stack up against the competition. Out of my riding buds, I was at the top of the pack. So when I did my first race, I was planning the start, finish, all this strategy stuff. During the race I was sucking wind like mad and luckily I got 2 flats so I could catch my breath. Don't you know, I came in DEAD LAST. It was a humbling experience. What really shocked me about the race was the support of the other riders out on the course. Everyone was pushing you to keep going, getting over that climb. Now this may only happen in the Novice class but it got me hooked.
So just go out, have fun and ride. If you see someone huffing like no tomorrow, tell them to "keep goin', this climb is yours". |

Just go ride and see how you do. It will give you the experience so that you are then able to perform better at your next one.
My first race was memorable because Tinker Juarez was racing the same event and although he lapped me (he did 3 laps to my 1) it was still a site to see him ride on by. That made the experience for me even though I finished near the back of my group.
Have fun first, be competitive second.
