| Knee cap pain after long rides | Echo Mar 11, 2002 4:55 PM | | This is a new one for me, must be getting old. Over the past two weekends I have gone on road rides, for about an 1.5 hrs. Shortly after the ride, I notice that I have a pain in the middle of the knee cap. Any ideas what this could be?
Thanks in advance. |
| Well I ain't.................. | Mike T. Mar 11, 2002 6:39 PM | | ....no Doc and even if I was I couldn't diagose over the computer but could it be overuse? Many riders who overdo it get knee strain. Did you ice it afterwards?
Try reading up on Chondromalacia on Google while you're icing your knee.
I'd back off, work up slowly to the rides you want to do, ice regularily and see a doc if it persists. |
| New seat, shoes or pedals?.... | DCepp Mar 12, 2002 4:22 AM | | any change in postioning may affect your knees by putting strain on them. Get a friend to help you make adjustments/take measurements while your on the bike. The latest Bicycling magazine (or was it MTB Action) had a good explanation bike size and fit.
Good luck.

| Patellofemoral pain | mtnpat Mar 12, 2002 5:47 AM | | Take a look at this link
http://www.aafp.org/afp/991101ap/2012.html
Or do your own search for patellofemoral pain syndrome. LOTs of info out there, and you may be surprised at to what may cause it, such as extended periods of sitting / driving.
I recently have started to suffer from knee pain (under and around the cap for me). The diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome seemed right on the money for me. I sit at a desk all day, and spend 3 hours driving also. |
| re: Knee cap pain after long rides | AndyE Mar 12, 2002 7:53 AM | | I get pain in my right knee after a ride if I am pushing too hard of a gear on the ride. If I consistently go one or two gears harder on climbs my knee lets me know about it later.
Ice and a beer afterwards really seem to help. |
| Common things occur commonly.... | The Squeaky Wheel Mar 12, 2002 8:24 AM | | Tough to diagnose over the web, but common things occur commonly. And the most common offender, as mentioned above, is patello-femoral syndrome (PFS). It is basically inflammation of the quad tendon caused by an imbalance of biomechanical forces across the joint.
As the name implies, the quadriceps group of the thigh are actually 4 separate muscles. Most cases of PFS are caused by a relative weakness of the inner group (vastus medialis) in relation to the outer group (vastus lateralis). Treatment consists of a combination of strengthening, stretching, icing & anti-inflammatories. Difficult for me to get into the details over the web, but perhaps one of the above mentioned web-sites or a physician/therapist would help.
Please keep in mind that there are other causes of knee pain and if in doubt, see a physician.

| Squeaky's advice worked for me | Cory Mar 12, 2002 8:33 AM | | FWIW, I had the same symptoms last year. My doctor (who's also a cyclist) recommended icing after rides, taking aspirin or ibuprofen whether it hurts or not and using lower gears. Cleared it up quick.
About the aspirin/ibu: They have anti-inflammatory action, which Tylenol doesn't. To maintain blood levels, he had me take two of them four times a day and keep it up for three days after the pain disappeared. |
| In my case... | Kleinadian Mar 12, 2002 10:03 AM | | What squeaky wheel mentioned applied to me. The pain would get so bad I couldn't continue riding. I saw a physiotherapist who gave me knee strengthening and stretching techniques that helped me out. It had to do with fluid behind the kneecap during excercise.
Could also be the way your clipless pedals are adjusted.
Painkillers and ice isn't a permanant solution. Get it checked out. |
| re: Knee cap pain after long rides | WarrGuru Mar 13, 2002 10:59 AM | | I recommend that you see a good Physical Therapist. One that rides. I went to a PT when I was having knee pains like yours. The PT showed me how to stretch properly and all of the pain went away.
I had previously gone to an Orthopedic Stergeon....took xrays...MRI....told me he could scope my knees...that's it. He was worthless. I requested to see a PT and withing 2 weeks, no more pain.
See a professional. Don't screw around with your knees. |
