| What is the terrain at Sea Otter? Which tires? | Philip Mar 14, 2002 10:53 PM | | This will be my first Sea Otter trip. What are your opinions on tire selection and pressure. I am considering some ZED races or Python Airlites. Is the terrain rocky or fireroad??? |
| Depends on the weather | WarrGuru Mar 15, 2002 7:35 AM | | This will also be my first race at Fort Ord. I rode the entire course 3 weeks ago. At that time I was running Panaracer XC Pros front and rear. The trails were hard pack with patches of sand all over the place. I decided then that I'd switch to a less aggressive / faster rolling tire.
I'll probably run Hutchinson Python AIr Lights or Bontrager Revolt x (or Revolt SS). It's supposed to rain all this weekend. Follow the weather closely. I don't expect too much mud because of all the sand. I guess we'll find out. |
| All fast and hardpack | Roger Mar 15, 2002 12:21 PM | | except for one or two rockier (Note not rocky, just rockier) section. Even with rain, I'd run fast rolling tires. |
| Anything that rolls fast... | GP Mar 15, 2002 12:42 PM | | The Otter XC course (that is, if it's the same as last year's) is fast and very rolling, with only a few short, steep climbs, no technical descents, one brief but very gnarly hike-a-bike (almost like rock-climbing), a lot of fast, wide fire road, a little bit of sand in one or two spots, a few sections of fast, windy singletrack with good, grippy soil, and the long, gradual fireroad climb to the finish. It also starts and finishes on the Laguna Seca racetrack (i.e., pavement). Having a low rolling resistance tire will be far more advantageous than having a knobby, technical tire. Pythons are great, but I'd even consider a Bontrager Revolt ST or a Ritchey Speedmax semislick - the course is THAT fast!
Of course, the weather is always a variable. If the course is wet, I'd want a knobbier tire. And from what I hear, the weather in Monterey can be very unpredictable - it's as likely as not to rain heavily.

| The current forcast is for rain... | shiggy©® Mar 15, 2002 1:29 PM | | ...so I plan on using somethimg that will not hold much muck. While it is sandy, it does get kicked up and can stick to the bike.
If it does dry out I will run Pythons. |
| Hey shiggy... | free-agent Mar 15, 2002 2:49 PM | | what are your thoughts on running 1.95 Mythos front and rear? They are about all I have right now, besides the Gators (which are way too heavy for racing IMO), and I don't think I can afford anything else right now, unless.... |
| Almost anything will work... | shiggy©® Mar 17, 2002 8:57 PM | | ...I have never used the Mythos but they should work fine. You can get some decent deals on tires at the Expo so look around for something you like on Saturday. |
| Mythos will work great | Roger Mar 20, 2002 12:49 PM | | use em and save your money. |
