Nashbar has their fluid trainer on sale for $129. It uses the same resistance unit as the Performance brand trainer (~$170) that's gotten great reviews here - with a different frame. You can also find lots of good magnetic trainers in your price range.

What about the roller trainers?

On the Nashbar and Performance trainers, is the front of bicycle suspended and "unconnected" to the platform as a result of the rear being elevated and assembled in the device?

Which system is most durable?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the education.
Rollers and stuff...TechniKal

I've never ridden rollers. I've -heard- that they are helpful for working on technique because you must maintian a good pedal stroke and balance, otherwise you end up on the floor. I've also heard that they don't offer the resistance level that the staionary trainers do, so they may not be as good for interval and strength workouts. Again, I've never ridden them, so take my comments with that in mind.

The Performance/Nashbar and pretty much any trainer made in the last few years elevates only the back of the bike. You can buy a special block to put under the front tire to even everything out, or you can just use a peice of wood or a phonebook or whatever else you may have laying around the house.

Durability: Some of the fluid trainers had problems with leakage in the past, but that seems to have been addressed. Check out the Reviews section for more info.

Minoura...Radar MCM #35

After I broke my wrist this winter I couldn't ride on the road, so I got the Minoura Mag trainer. It's the one with 7 levels of resistance and you might be able to get it with the remote for under $175. Provides great training...on my first ride on the road after I got my cast off, I broke my personal best on a 1/2 km climb by 9 seconds! Trainer riding can definetly keep you in shape, if not improve your fitness...
