Rode terribly - what's wrong?mtg3992

First race of the season was yesterday and rode terribly. My LT is around 177 but I averaged 178 on the first lap, 181 on the 2nd and 180 on the 3rd. Spent a lot of time at 95% of max HR. Bonked hard on the last lap – lap time went from 33min/lap to 38 on the 3rd. Sipping ½ strength Endruox 1st two laps & water on the last. Funny thing was, on longer/gradual climbs and flats I would fly by whoever was in front of me – almost effortlessly. But then it gets steep or technical I'm the one getting passed.

Just moved up to Sport and was for a middle of the pack finish. By the last lap I was just for a finish.

Any thoughts? Help me out – I need an excuse! ;)

You only lost 6 seconds by the last lap. its your first race in sport.

On the other hand: you went out to hard, ran outta supplements and paid for it.

What did you eat before the race? What is your metabolism like? ie. do you get weak without food during the day like I do? Proper eating before a race is always a big deal to me.

Next time, instead of Endurox, drink cytomax before the race. Put some watered down (sweetened) Iced tea or Gatorade in your camelback. Bring a gel or 2 with you and tuck them in the bottom of your shorts. If you think you might bonk, those will give you an extra 1/2 hour.

Also, sounds like long endurance rides or an epic mtb ride will be good for your training plan.
How long was your race?mtnbkaz

The longer the race, the more important nutrition becomes. If your race is less than 90 minutes (sounds like your was around 105), you really don't need to eat during a race assuming that you were properly fueled at the start. Your body can store ~90 minutes worth of glycogen in your muscles (this is an average - individual circumstances may vary). If you are racing longer than 90 minutes then you will need to consume something or you'll bonk. If you're not eating right before the race than you might be going to the line with less than a full tank to begin with so you'll bonk even earlier. Sounds like nutrition was a factor.

As for your HR, I don't see a problem there. My HR is always high at the beginning of a race (the adrenaline screws things up). Then after a few miles I settle into a slightly lower HR.
