Too cold to friggin' ride and I'm gaining FAT(9 posts)

Too cold to friggin' ride and I'm gaining FATIvan the Horrible

Anyone else loath to ride in the cold? I haven't ridden in 2 weeks and the Holiday pounds are coming on like a Gieblelstadt E ticket ride.

10 lbs in 2 weeks.

Sincerely,

Fat Whiner

Are there other things that you would consider getting involved in to avoid dealing with the cold while riding? Hit the gym, play hoops, hockey, etc. If not, do you or have you considered getting a trainer to ride your bike indoors? Need to find some type of activity that will keep you active so you don't start gaining the weight.

Good luck.

Don't know how cold it is where you are, but I've been getting out at night in 20-30F and it's amazing how quick you warm up. I usually just have a long sleeve jersey and a jacket to cut the wind plus shorts and tights and am usually sweating within 5 minutes. Worth getting out and trying. My family thinks I'm nuts, but I figure that if you can ski in 10F with alot of sitting around on the lift, than biking in 25F makes tons of sense! S

I live in southeastern Wisconsin and ride outside at least 3 times a week. On Saturdays it is 3 to 4 hours. It's all about the clothes you wear.

You can do like I did and buy a stationary trainer. Then you can hook up your road bike to it and watch TV while you pedal. Hard to do for more than hour due to sheer monotony, but at least it's an hour per day.

If your winding down for the winter and are riding less then you'll need to adjust your diet also. Take in less carbohydrates like pizza, beer and candy bars and eat less so that you dont put weight on.

But you should really go out though, i really like to ride in the winter if its a bright day with frost and snow. Its a different kind of challenge. Head out up into the hills and forest but wear the correct clothes.

Yeah, I understand what you all are saying. It's really not just the cold, it's cold AND dark by the time I get home from work. It's colder and dark before I leave for work. A warm slice of Prime Rib with Au Jus is more tempting than a frozen face ride on a bike and waking up with a raw throat the next day. Actually, my last ride in the cold resulted in a sore throat x1 week and it really put me off. Oh well, I VOW to ride tomorrow at noon and Sunday at noon. Perhaps beer and lobster can take a back seat this weekend. Besides, I don't want to go buy a bigger belt.

Sincerely,

Love (handle) Machine

I too, as the result of less training and getting home after dark, have found that I have put on weight. This is more than depressing to me because I wanted to maintain my weight over the off season and then loose twenty pounds from Jan to end of March. Now it looks like I have no choice but to loose F#cking 30 pounds. The first 5 to 8 pounds will come off easy just from eating fewer calories and eating smaller frequently and also eating less carbs (something I have not been doing) I have my training journal ready for January 1 but have started early. I went for a 2.5 hour ride the other day in 35 degree with a wind chill factor of 23 degrees. Yeah it was cold but like I always seem to forget is that you really do start sweating 5 minutes into it. It was easy overdistance. So here I go, I hope this doesn't come across corney. I challenge you to a weight drop freak fest. I will report every week how much slop I have lost. I will be honest and will give you specifics about my training each week and dietary intake if you would want the specs. I am doing this for added self motivation. Now if you agree you will include your progress. Why on this board and not e-mail, well this way the people on this board can have an extreme amount of fun at our expense if we fail. Let me know. Oh BTW the winner is the one who gets the goal weight off at the goal time and not earlier (Too much weight loss to quick is not what I'm interested in.) Let me know. If anyone else wants in let me know. Let the fat loss begin. ;o)

I went about 3 months (+7lbs)without riding before I dished out the cash for a Minoura trainer. It's nothing like the real deal but keeps you from getting chunky and a much better workout than a treadmill.
