| First go-round on the trainer a HUGE... | free-agent Jan 2, 2003 10:25 AM | | success. I was a bit nervous about how I would respond to riding for hours in my basement given all of the stories I haver read on this board. I got a Cycleops Fluid-2 and set it up in my basement. I set up a stereo system and grabbed a few rockin' CDs. My first ride was only 1 1/2 hours, but it was actually tolerable and somewhat enjoyable. The next step is to get a TV and VCR so I can watch racing tapes while I ride. I think the key is playing music that keeps my mind off of the fact that I am pedalling nowhere for miles in the house. |
| I can't get past 45 minutes without . . . | JoeBob Jan 2, 2003 12:02 PM | | going crazy. And I have a TV and VCR set up with remote controls. Any techniques for staying on longer. I'd like to stay on the rollers for a hour. |
| For me it's all about music and... | free-agent Jan 2, 2003 1:16 PM | | mental imagery. I crank the tunes (Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age-anything heavy!) and think about dropping people. I also try to never look at the time! Think about it as being fun and don't dwell on how boring it is. Maybe try taking a quick water break or something after every 45 minutes (positive reinforcement)-give you something to look forward to. |
| yesss... | Radar MCM #35 Jan 2, 2003 12:07 PM | | Maybe there is other people besides me that finds trainer riding reqarding. It sure beats the frostbite and hypothermia I would get trying to ride more than an hour (extra layers=no effect in Ohio's winter). I did 2 1/2 hours yesterday, good z2 ride, and I'll have around 9 hours for the week by sunday (+ 3 hours weights this week) only a couple months til we could hit 40 degrees outside!! :-D

| Any short breaks or do you... | free-agent Jan 2, 2003 1:19 PM | | stay in the saddle the entire time? I had to refill my water bottle once, but found that it was a nice way to break up the monotony a bit. Looking forward to seeing how I do for 2+ hours. By the way-I did a 2 1/2 hour ride yesterday too, but it was in sunshine and temps in the 50s! The Pacific Northwest gets wet in the winter, but I sure do appreciate the "breaks" we get once in a while. |
| Any short breaks or do you... | mountaingoat Jan 2, 2003 2:20 PM | | Another key if you can is to spin with friends. When it gets too nasty to ride here in Wisconsin we ride in my buddies basement. We usually do two hours, once in a while get three in.
I did three hours by myself once on the trainer, that was brutal. Luckily this year the winter has been good, so I have only had to hit the trainer three times.
I did three hours yesterday outside on my buddies crossbike. That was pretty fun to ride. It was my first time on one. |
| nah | Radar MCM #35 Jan 3, 2003 12:45 PM | | If no one is around to refill my bottle I run real fast and fill it up and then run back....helps keep the hr up :) But yeah...the only other break I take is the restroom, which I would do on a outdoors ride anyway. I keep gels/granola bars in my jersey pockets. Temps in the 50s sounds great right now...the weatherman said January could be warmer and drier than normal here, so I'll keep worshipping with the trainer cult til then...keep the faith! lol :)

| yesss... | DrMBike Jan 2, 2003 7:20 PM | | Man, I feel so sorry for you guys. I live in Arizona and the weather is beautiful this time of year. I go nuts after about 30 minutes on an indoor trainer. |
| Amen... | mtnbkaz Jan 3, 2003 7:15 AM | | I bought a trainer a couple years ago to ride after dark in the winter. I used it a few times but absolutely hated it. Last winter I splurged on a light system and haven't touched the trainer since. I have friends here in AZ that still ride their trainer in the winter while watching movies but I just don't get it. I'd much rather go hit the road/trail any day. And for the 3 days a year that it rains, I'll just take a rest day. ;) |
| on a mtb? | Jas0n Jan 3, 2003 11:23 AM | | i cant ride my trainer with my mtb. the position may be more relazed and comfotable than my road bike, but it lacks the hand positions and the ability to change those positions that a road bike does. also, do you lockout your mtb if it is fullsuspension? given teh the rear wheel is not on the ground, every design would bob, esp. if doing sprints. also, does anyone else feel like the grearing doesn't provide enough resistance. i have an xtr crankset/cassette, nad it still leaves me wishing for a harder gear to push, somethng that doesnt happen on my road bike. |
| yup ride my ht. resistance depends on the trainer...nm | Radar MCM #35 Jan 3, 2003 12:36 PM | | |
| re: First go-round on the trainer a HUGE... | sebring Jan 3, 2003 7:07 AM | | I like to watch the training video that I bought with my trainer. I use that once a week usually. I also like to use my trainer while watching a movie. I take my watch and set the count down timer and do certain gears for a certain amount of time. I go through a lot of gears threw out the whole thing. I start in 2-3 go up to 2-8, then go to 3-1 work all the way up to 3-8, switch back to 2-8 go down to 2-3 back to big ring again. Do this for a while during a movie and the time goes by fairly well. It hasn't been too cold here in Delaware, but it seems to rain every other day so I use my trainer a few times per week. |
| Try the Super Bowl Century in your living room... | Retro Jan 3, 2003 9:10 AM | | For me, it's a toss-up whether I'd rather spend an hour a day on the trainer or just go ahead and have a heart attack. But last year a couple of friends challenged each other to a Super Bowl Century--they set up their rollers in one guy's family room and started riding at the Super Bowl kickoff, to see who could go farther by the end of the game. The loser had to take the winner and his wife to dinner. I can't remember the numbers, but the winner went something like 132 miles... |
| Interesting idea-but I don't think alcohol... | free-agent Jan 3, 2003 12:04 PM | | and cycling mix very well :)
Gotta have beers for the big game, especially since the Packers will be in it! (I'm from WI) |
| D%mn! Was the winners initials L.A.? | hrcon Jan 3, 2003 12:16 PM | | Isn't the game only like 4 hours? 30+ mph for 4 hours? You have some strong riding buddies!
I never get bored on rollers or trainer, but it does help to watch cycling videos. Just learning how to stand on rollers now so > 1 hour rides won't be such a pain in the a##, literally!
