| Polar S710 HRM | INDYBIKR Jan 4, 2003 11:19 AM | | Does anyone have experience with the cycling functions on the S510 or S710 monitors? I have been using the S410 for two years now and would like to step up to one with the cycling functions. Also you get basically unlimited data storage also which the S410 is lacking.
Thanks for your help. |
| I've got a S710.... | SS_MB-7 Jan 4, 2003 4:32 PM | | I've been religiously using my S710 for all races, rides and training sessions. I only just recently started using the cycling functions since I've mounted my road bike in a Tacx trainer for winter training and wanted to monitor speed, distance, etc. I've mounted the speed sensor on the rear seatstay (it supposed to be mounted on the fork) since only the rear wheel spins on the trainer. Just last week, I bought the optional cadence kit and now I have HR, speed and cadence all in one unit for analysis. I'd recommend the S710 over the S510 (each has cycling options) since: - the S710 has much, much more memory than the S510; - the S710 ca store 99 files vs 1 with 5 summaries on the S510; and - the S710 uses the IR link to upload/download data vs the SonicLink of the S510, which I have heard is flaky. | Mike, Do you have trouble in getting a signal at the back... | DIRT BOY Jan 6, 2003 10:14 AM | | of the bike? I was thinking of doing the same thing.

| Very rarely.... | SS_MB-7 Jan 7, 2003 4:40 AM | | Very rarely will the signal be dropped. Maybe 2-3 times per 3-4 hr ride, I'll be cruising along at 30km/hr when the speed will suddenly drop to 0km/hr. Within a few seconds, the speed quickly returns to 30km/hr.
Here's an email reply I received from Polar on the subject. BTW, I've forwarded you their reply with the attached instructions.

Mike B.

"The speed sensor was designed to be mounted on the front wheel. However increasing the transmission range may allow you to use it on the rear wheel.
There are three possible settings for the transmission range in the sensor: short, medium and long.
We strongly recommend that you send the sensor to an authorised Polar Service Center, where the unit is tested for water resistance after adjustment. Water resistance cannot be guaranteed after an unauthorised service.
If you wish to adjust the sensor by yourself, follow the attached instructions carefully and note that the warranty does not cover damage or consequential damage caused by service not carried out by an authorised service center of Polar Electro.
(See attached file: TRANSMISSION RANGE ADJUSTMENT.doc)
If you would like to return your unit for service please return your sensor plus $2.95 for return shipping and handling to:

| One ride with the mod. sensor, not impressed... | S-Sal Jan 13, 2003 8:07 AM | | The signal dropped all the time when mounted on the seat stay. I ended up finishing the ride with the watch on the waist belt of my camelback. It is mounted on a 19.5" Ti bike, the metal seems to interfere with the signal. I mounted it to the fork and it seems to work fine now, just can't use it for speed on the trainer. |
| Hmm.... | SS_MB-7 Jan 13, 2003 2:22 PM | | Mine is mounted on a 50.5cm (c-c) Ti road bike and I don't have any problems. I guess my frame is small enough and/or the line-of-site is close enough that it works on my bike. Ride Hard, Mike B. |
| Have you guys tried the power unit? | truant8 Jan 8, 2003 5:26 AM | | I'm very interested in the power unit. I just am doubtful about it's accuracy. I just bought a Performance trainer with the computer for miles and watts, awesome deal for $250! So, I'm watching my watts and avg watts and would love to see what my avg watts is on my off-road TT and road TT. Anyone tried it? |
| Look here ... | Duncan! Jan 8, 2003 2:46 PM | | I have a S710 w cadence sensor, but not the power unit ... check these out:
