Rollers, Fluid or Magnetic...which one? (3 posts)
| Rollers, Fluid or Magnetic...which one? | gapriderz Jan 14, 2003 4:26 PM | | I'm in the market for a trainer. I'm confuse which type will work with me. Any suggestions? |

Roller:
Trainer:
Rollers are great for working on form, balance, etc. since both wheels are spinning and it is up to you to keep the bike rolling and balanced.
If you decide to go with a trainer, now you have the choice of wind, magnetic, or fluid.
Wind trainers are effective, but loud. The wind trainer's resistance increases with speed. Wind trainers are generally the least expensive.
Magnetic trainers are quieter than wind trainers. Most mag trainers offer a thumb shifter to adjust resistance levels.
Fluid trainers offer a smoother and quieter ride than wind and mag trainers. They also have a better "feel" to them since they replicate an outdoor road ride better. The force curve is exponential so as you pedal faster, the resistance increases exponentially. The Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer has been calibrated using a Power-Tap. CycleOps fluid trainers are among the most popular and well know fluid trainers, but if you read the reviews here and Roadbikereview, you'll notice several complaints of fluid leakage. This is inherent in the CycleOps' design which has a shaft which penetrates the fluid reservoir. The Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer is not prone to leakage since the reservoir is completely sealed....click here for more info on the Kurt Kinetic.
