Run and Run and run some more, after you get sick of running, swim, those ellyptical machines do wonders for your hips but if you want to cut the fat you want high intensity, but dont take my word, i am no doctor, just a kid that was once fat and now thin

I was an oarsman for several years so I will speak about that sport. Rowing will shed fat. I lost 70 pounds in 8 and a half weeks when I joined my team. But that was rowing for about 120min a day. Rowing will develope your back, shoulders, forearms, aspects of your tricepts, deltoids, and lats. Rowing will not do much for the bicepts nor for the abs. What I would recommend is rowing for 45 minutes of steady state(maintaining a constant pace and heart rate) then get up stretch for a second and grab some water then go run, jog, or elliptical for 20 minutes.

Remember that fat burning does not really happen actively until you've been working out for 20 minutes.
Also try to keep in mind that diet is a major key in altering a body type. At least it was for me.

Goodluck.

Rowing rocks, if done properly. Most people at my gym don't do it properly. Rowing is a leg sport. Your upper body is just a rebound mechanism for finishing the work of your legs and setting them up to do it again. Keep your back and elbows firm from the 'catch' when you start the stroke until roughly when your hands pass your knees. Your hands should move in a straight line parallel to the floor, ending in front of your belly button. Do it right and you get a very satisfying sense of power. Do it wrong and you can hurt your back or simply get too frustrated to receive the calorie-burning benefits.

to build muscle and intense workouts. Although you may burn more calories during the workout with moderate exercise, intense workout keep your matabolism higher so you keep burning calories long after the workout is over. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you will burn 24/7.

An hour on the rowing machine is a lot!!! And it's full body so I think you would get the most out of that.
Yeah, ditto on the rowing machine...BH

Compared to a lifecycles and elliptical trainers, these things are much better at getting your heart rate up. A plus for me is that at my gym nobody uses them so they are always available. I guess they are not the equipment of choice for all the fat @ss women that I always seem to be waiting for who plug along on level zero on the lifecycles never breaking a sweat.
