'Friels' strengh training(4 posts)

First year following a structured training program here....anyway, just finishing up the maximum strength (MS phase) on Friels' plan and going to the Power endurance (PE phase) The plan calls for using lighter weight and lifting at rapid rates (Morris has similar portion for weight training) ...question is if anyone has done these workouts on the bike instead of using weights. I can create enough resistance with a good hill and high gear. Thanks for any help,

Rookie

I think Friel now recommends getting out of the weight room and doing these on the bike. I think it's a good idea.

Doing a steep climb with an unnaturally high gear (real low cadence) will most simulate the maximum strength lifting.

Sprinting drills will most simulate the PE phase.

The key is to convert the strength from the lifting into power on the bike. Last year I followed the plan to the "tee" and I think it helped some.

The lifting can't hurt. Now I'm lifting all year around (once a week). Once the lifting overlaps the climbing and sprinting drills, I do feel an supplementing effect; I feel stronger. The benefits of core work can be felt, especially at my age (37). I would never give up the weights.

BTW, I'm 5'10", 37, 167 lbs (in January!!), and in the best shape in 15 years. Following a program is the key (any program).

Anyways, good luck with your program. Find what works for you, and keep at it.

Thanks Alex,

Ive done 2 PE specific workouts on the bike and feels like I am getting a good workout. Not as streneous as the heavy lifting in MS phase..... but feels like my legs have lost a 'feel' for the bike so Im glad I am doing these workouts on the bike. Well see in March when the racing starts !
