| Non-structured training? | amex420 Jan 9, 2004 7:58 PM | | I was wondering if anyone has trained with more of a non structured style. Last year I was doing intervals and it got boring quickly. This year I was trying to have a different approach. I would ride hard 2-3 days a week where I go out and push real hard getting my avg heart rate similar to what it would be in a race. After each hard day, I would do a recovery ride. I would also throw in at least 1 endurance ride each week. I am a senior sport rider just about to start my racing season. I read a the Carmichael and the Friel book and am incorporating that a little. When I am doing the intensity, I drop down my total mileage a little bit. Has anyone had any success with non structured training? Or do I need to do a structured training plan to make more sufficient gains? Any input would be helpful.
Thanks

I can't possibly maintain the sort of rigidity in my training schedule that one ends up with if you follow him to every last detail. Life just doesn't work that way for me. On the other hand I do things on purpose to meet certain goals (performing well at races.) That, to my mind, is structured training. What I have read in Friel has a big influence on those things that I "do on purpose" but I don't feel I'm a failure if I don't follow his plans perfectly. Pay attention to what your body tells you. When you feel good and when you're fast take note of what you've been doing the past few weeks. You've got the right ideas, work on aerobic conditioning but also work on race efforts. Don't forget to rest and pay attention to your diet. Most of all make sure it's fun. |
