Heartrate..the usual questionAlanS

Here I am , 52, 145 lbs. Fairly good shape...Now that I have a heart monitor, how do I know max? And for that matter, how do I use the damn thing? What ranges do I WANT to train in? I was in the gym today, on the Precor elipictical machine...range was 130-145. I understand that one does NOT want to exceed max for any length of time... Since it is winter (5 degrees average temps.) I thought I would use the Spin classes and cardio machines in the gym...The HR monitor would be a great way to know if I am getting any benefit...Thanks. Alan
The manual is usually a great place to start but...Kaparzo

There are plenty of resources that can help you train w/heart rate. Mountain Bike Training Bible by Joe Friel is an excellent book for almost everything you need to know. David Moris writes a book called performance cycling that is more geared towards intensity. There are also a few books published by velopress that adress training with heart rate. I really reccomend getting Friel's book, its very easy to follow and read and contains a ton of info that isnt confusing.
