HRM selection - Sigma or Sports Instruments?(6 posts)

HRM selection - Sigma or Sports Instruments?bhutata
Jan 13, 2004 3:03 PM
I'm in the market for a heart rate monitor and I've pretty well whittled down my choices to the Sigma Sport PC1600 or the Sports Intruments ECG5. I can get either one new for $50-60 and right now I'm leaning toward the Sigma just because of the recovery time feature. Any comments or other suggestions? I pretty well decided that I don't need to lay out the bucks for a high-dollar model and I'd like something a little more than the barebones HR-only watches.

FWIW, I'm buying this mainly to help me watch my HR as I work out (in the past I've caught myself getting over 200) and to track improvement as I train.

I just got the SI ECG5 for the same $59 and so far it's ok. It is pretty bare bones as far as features are concerned and it looks nice. The one thing I wish it had was the option to display heartrate as a percentage of HRmax.
I bought the sigma 1600, enough features, had it for a yearmoab63

still works great. Has all the features I need. I only use it about once per week, to see if Im training at the correct range to compare it against my own breathing. Never for racing.

Please let me know where to find the Sports Instruments. Every place I look seems to be overseas.

I found the Sports Instruments ECG5 at Supergo.com. I did finally change my mind and decide to order this model. It has good reviews on this site and it looks like a good choice if I decide to wear it as an everyday watch, especially since you can change it so the time is displayed at the bottom in larger numbers. I was less enthralled with the 'recovery feature' of the Sigma PC1600 after I found out exactly what it really does: it's just a timer that lets you know what your HR is 3 minutes after you stop excercising.
check out ediscountbike.com for the spts instrument (nm)...bellullabbo
