got rings? custom made chainrings, 25% less weight (5 posts)
| got rings? custom made chainrings, 25% less weight | scc Nov 2, 2001 8:41 AM | | Looking for custom sized rings for my cranks, I ran across this company. They make custom lightened chainrings, any bolt pattern, any size. I found out that I cant get the 30 or 31t size I want, but they can make 32t in a 104mm bolt battern. Weird "indemnety" thing though...

Chris,
Re: http://www.argonet.co.uk/highpath/cycle_/eggs.htm
I'd like to know if I can get [lightweight] (for my 2x9 drive MTB)
several 104mm BCD 4 bolt rings in a 29 or 30 T (non-oval), a price
quote in U.S.D., PayPal - Visa - M.C options, and can you ship to the
U.S.
Thanks
and
I'd like lightweight, 104mm 32t 4 bolt ring, no ramps or pins. Can you
give me a quote per ring, and include shipping to the US and the
estimated weight of the ring?
Response
32t costs £49.50, plus £20.00 custom engraving if required, plus £12.00
for hand-polishing or black poly-colour finish (*) if required, plus
£15.00 delivery per complete order (any size) to the USA.
(*) We have a special offer on black poly-colour finish at the moment -
no charge! The alloy is polyester powder-coated before machining, so the
teeth and cutouts stand out in contrasting silver.
Note that '£' means UK pounds. If you pay by plastic card then the banks
will sort out the currency conversion. However please *don't* send
plastic card details by email (it's not safe), but phone or fax them
during UK office hours (0900-1700hrs, Mon-Fri) or send them with your
order by post.
Weight? Well it's difficult to give a figure as we can make it as
lightweight and weak, or as heavyweight and strong, as you like. Since
all aluminium alloys have approximately the same density, the final
weight will be the same as that of any other Al chainring of similar
proportions - whatever the make. Our standard cutouts are a sensible
compromise between weight and strength, and our lightweight versions
reduce the weight by about 25%. Any lighter and we couldn't guarantee
the strength.
Despatch should be within 7 days of receipt of your order.
Finally, because of the litigation situation in North America, I regret
that we have to ask you to sign a copy of the following indemnity.
Please post or fax it back to us. If you email it then please scan it
and send it as a zipped bitmap attachment - we can decode most common
formats as long as they're not platform-specific (eg not some weird and
wonderful Micro$oft-specific format!)
Regards,
Chris.

| I've said several times on this board that it isn't physically.. | AZ X-Racer Nov 2, 2001 10:57 AM | | ...possible to make smaller than a 32t with any reliability for a 104/64mm bolt pattern crank--which all the four arm cranks, but XTR and its clones happen to be... I learned that at the beginning of last month while contemplating the 4-arm or 5-arm 2x9 crank question. This--again--is why I went back to a 5-arm Race Face ISIS crank instead of the Truvativ 4-arm setup. You just have more chainring/gear versatility with the 5-arm 94/58mm bolt pattern. If you go with 4-arm cranks, you're stuck with the 32t middle ring or larger.
Going to a custom made ring is so expensive---and it won't help you. |
| very true | scc Nov 2, 2001 11:48 AM | | but I can get away with the 32t inner and a 12/34 xtr cassette. For lighter weight (about 25% lighter than shimano 32t) I can get a vuelta 32t with no pins or ramps in a 104mm bolt pattern, but not until february when they are released, by then my new shimano xt 32t will be toast anyway. |
