| What is employee price at bike shops? | sam16 Nov 2, 2001 7:11 PM | | Hello. I was just wondering what employee price is for bike shops. This really cool guy at a shop said he could give me employee discount. He said Trek is 20% below wholesale but what is wholesale and what would the price be for normal components like shifters, brakes, cranks, etc.?
Thanks a lot.

This is A Canadian shop, so the tax rate is 15 percent. So, usually when paying cash emplyees dont have to pay tax, because cash is much better from the owner's point of view.
So, it totals to about 25 percent off the retail, or tag price. Then deduct taxes.
Remember this about shops. For most mid to high end mtb parts and accesories, the dealer cost, or wholesale is about 60% percent of the full price. That can always depend on the part and the number of parts that the store ordered at the time.
I dont know what the guy means about Trek 20 below wholesale, because it doesnt make much sense, hes probaly just trying to scam you into thinking your getting a deal.
Its very hard for shops to give deals on mtb stuff, because they make such a small profit. |

Many companies sell bikes to employees this way too (cannondale, trek, not sure on specialized)
generally it is 20% under wholesale (your buddy is not kidding) Many local racers get this discount too if they can sweet-talk the company. If they catch you (shop guy) reselling this stuff he/she is in big trouble. They do keep track of serial numbers - if a warranty is called in, you might get cought. Ive seen it happen several times on bike purchases/re-sells. |

| every shop is different... | shiggy Nov 5, 2001 8:41 AM | | ...and very few we allow employees to buy parts for someone else. Around here that is grounds for firing. |
