28 hole rear rim - help!owlhollow1

Can anyone tell me where I can find a 28 hole rear rim, with
ceramic sidewall coating that weighs in at 400 g or less? I need
it to replace the original one from my racelite wheelset. (some eyelets pulled through the rim) Thanks.....

im also looking for a 28 hole rim with Ceramic Sidewalls . but Mavic and bontrager produce no more rims with 28 hole and ceramic sidewalls.

your valiant ceramic ASYM which you are replacing was abut 420-435 grams most likely. Your best bet is to get that same rim - maybe without the ceramic coating. You can re-use the spokes this way if you are on a budget.

A Mavic x-max rim is $100.00. the ones I have measured came in between 369 and 380 grams. Most in the 375 gram range. Interestingly, the fronts were heavier most of the time (26 hole) Ive weighed only about 12 of these so your mileage may vary. The magic behind the x-max rim is that it was designed as a ceramic wall right fron the start. The tops do tend to dent easily - soooo thin. But a crazy-tall sidewall and a monster wide, square box section. Double stainless eyelets too - no worries of pulling through.

Typical weight for a Bontrager Valiant ASYM ceramic (which is what your "racelite" rim is) runs anywhere from 425-445g. The BS factory claimed weight for the ceramic verison is 415g.

Now, this rim, which is at least 415g, has failed due to spoke pulling through the rim. So you want to replace this rim that has just failed with a lighter, weaker rim? Unless hte failure was due to a crash, that doesn't seem like an ideal solution.

There isn't a rim that averages sub-400 gram ceramic rim, 28 hole or not. Lightest ceramic rim is the Mavic X517, and those usually run about 415-420 grams. These also don't come in a 28 hole drilling. I seen claims for the Mavic Xmax rim, but have yet to see one on a scale at under 400.

Your best bet from a performance standpoint would be to go with a Bontrager Mustang ASYM rim in the ceramic finish. If you can find one, that is. This rim was made in 28H drilling for 2001. It's dimensionally identical to the standard Valiant rim, so you may be able to re-use your spokes. The only difference between the Mustang and the Valiant is that the Mustang has a reinforced ridge running over the spokebed. Exactly what would have prevented your current problem. Weight might be another 20 grams (at worst, I've had them come in LIGHTER than some of Valiants i've gotten) and should be more durable. Only downside would be cosmetic in that the ceramic model only came in a gray finish, so your color won't match.

I'd suggest you email Bontrager and find out if they have any of those Mustangs in back stock or held for warranty, and if so you should be able to get a dealer to order it in for you.

I've seen these for a few months, so the demand seems pretty low. It's not a Bontrager rim, per se, but they have a decent rep, with ceramic claimed weight at 405 grams. Real weight might be higher due to 4 fewer spoke holes (or worn dies, but trust B4ME on this stuff, most rims vary).
One bad thing is the difference in rim ERD's. The Valiants are 539mm, while the Swami runs 546mm. Spokes are cheap, though.

The Swami is a screaming deal....anyone had experience with this rim?
Just wondering about its durability. If its not a bad rim, I could
offset the weight with ti spokes at that price.

Trek's Matrix division is their in-house manufacturer of rims. When Trek bought out Bontrager, all the "Matrix" rims became "Bontrager" rims. They also produced all the Rolf rims (although Rolf is doing their own thing now). So from a qualitative standpoint, there shouldn't much difference between a "Matrix" and a "Bontrager" rim. All made in the same factory.

I think mine wieghed more like 430 though and lasted me just over 2 years

Same thing happened to my Racelite wheelset. The LBS couldn't get the exact replacement rim so they went with a ceramic Valiant front rim 28 hole. Works just fine although it's not ASYM. They got the dish right on and the wheel is like new.

Cool. Do you have the Racelites with the King hubs? If so, is there any chance you know what size spokes you need to build the wheel with the Valiant? This seems like my best option, so I am going to order one tomorrow now that I know it will work ok. Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this.
