Bolts, the last frontier...........(Nino?) (3 posts)
| Bolts, the last frontier...........(Nino?) | scc Nov 5, 2001 9:59 AM | | After putting on the lightest but most reliable components, my last stop is some SRP items I'm interested in for my 19.8 lb hardtail. Anyone ordered or used these kits? Do you know how much weight you saved?
Nino you have got:
Brakes (f&r) Avid Mag (with Al-bolts)
F. Derailer XTR (with 2 Al bolts)
R. Derailer Dura-ace (with Al bolt)
on your SWorks M4, how much weight was reduced and (if you can estimate) what is the weight savings of the following products, ....... any ideas?:
$73.55 14 piece XTR Ti bolt kit for f/r brakes. SKU BR030
$12.00, 4 piece XTR rear derailleur kit. SKU ARD021-

| -130g:Ti only for stem+seatpost.everything else aluminum.... | nino Nov 5, 2001 11:06 AM | | the only place you need the added strenght of Titanium is at the stem and seatpost.all other bolts can be out of aluminum which is a lot cheaper than Ti. all bolts together make for about a 130g weight saving on a MTB: Aluminum (savings over steel) chainring bolts (2x5pcs) -30g Crank fixing bolts -15g f-derailer (2 main bolts) -5g r-derailer (hanger bolt, cable stop) -ca.8g although i would highly recommend keeping the stock XTR Ti hanger bolt brakes (4 canti-bolts (short steel =14g / Ti M6-13mm =11g / Al M6-14mm =6.5g ),2 cable stops (-5g),4 padcarrier nut (-4 pcs Al =4g 4 pcs steel =13g) ) -20g a-head cap bolt (short) -4g bottlecage (4 pcs M5x10mm Al =3g /Ti =6g /Steel =10g) -7g seatpost clamp -5g pedals ? -10g (my corratecs had 8 steel bolts) TITANIUM (savings over steel) canti brake bosses on fork (2 pcs) -6g (Manitou Ti: 12g/Rock-shox SID steel :18g / Manitou steel : 21g) stem (4-6 pcs) 5-10g seatpost ca. 3-8g brakepad carrier bolts (4pcs) -9g (4 pcs Ti=14g /4 pcs steel = 23g) Ti bolt-on axles instead of QR -70g (i`d recommend steel bolt-on axles which are only 20g heavier but add stiffness to fork and rear-end) Carbon (savings over aluminum) a-head spacer 10mm -6g remember: Titanium is about 1/3 lighter than steel Aluminum is 1/3 the weight of steel and 1/2 the weight of Titanium Carbon is about 1/2 the weight of aluminum forget about those tiny derailer adjuster bolts.they cost a lot, won`t last and save "nothing". I hope that helps |
| so it seems it is really not worth the efforts | scc Nov 5, 2001 1:49 PM | | Aluminum (savings over steel)
chainring bolts (2x5pcs) -30g
Crank fixing bolts -15g
f-derailer (2 main bolts) -5g
r-derailer (hanger bolt, cable stop) -ca.8g although i would highly recommend keeping the stock XTR Ti hanger bolt
brakes (4 canti-bolts (short steel =14g / Ti M6-13mm =11g / Al M6-14mm =6.5g ),2 cable stops (-5g),4 padcarrier nut (-4 pcs Al =4g
4 pcs steel =13g)) -20g
(so the SRP brake kit would save me 39 gms for the pair)
a-head cap bolt (short) -4g
bottlecage (4 pcs M5x10mm Al =3g /Ti =6g /Steel =10g) -7g
seatpost clamp -5g
pedals ? -10g (my corratecs had 8 steel bolts)
TITANIUM (savings over steel)
canti brake bosses on fork (2 pcs) -6g (Manitou Ti: 12g/Rock-shox SID steel :18g / Manitou steel : 21g)
stem (4-6 pcs) 5-10g
seatpost ca. 3-8g
brakepad carrier bolts (4pcs) -9g (4 pcs Ti=14g /4 pcs steel = 23g)
Ti bolt-on axles instead of QR -70g (i`d recommend steel bolt-on axles which are only 20g heavier but add stiffness to fork and rear-end)
Carbon (savings over aluminum)
a-head spacer 10mm -6g
I already have a Ti cable fixing bolt on my rear der.
I would not really benefit from the derailleur kit, nor the 39gms (or so) from the brake kit.
I'll just forget this one. I guess that's it for me, no where else I can shave weight. You saw the specs on my bike (the web address i e-mailed you). Can you think of anything else?
PS those Twister Pro's are great! They release a little sooner than the Comp S's but roll so fast. Great for the conditions here.
Glad to finally break into the "teens" with my 19.8 lb bike, the lightest bike (mtb) I've actually witnessed.
Also, you really should try out the Titec pork rind grips. They are not soft foam but really firm instead. You can order them at Titec.com, and mine (cut down 75%) are 14 gms!
Take it easy Nino....... |
