Tests like these. I still see a lack of mechanical disc brake comparison...

It seems that the Marta is more powerful overall than the B4, but the Formula got a better overall score. Probably because of the weight they came up with here combined with the lower cost. I wonder if the cables were cut to the same length on all the brakes. They don't all come the same length out of the box and it would be interesting to know if they took the time to cut them to a standard length and bleed them. Not likely though...

So now we have the two big German mags giving us conflicting reports. The weight on the Louise and the Martha is also a little surprising.

AZ X-Racer, if you read this, did you weigh your Marthas? I have calculated my bike will be only 23g heavier with Louises, and about 70g lighter with Marthas. This is making a mess of things...

357g with a Manitou post mount caliper, and the rear was 374g in my small NRS frame.

If you want the power, I'd go with the Louise. Everyone I've talked to has said that they are really worth it if you want more wet, downhill stopping power. It isn't really a huge difference in weight and they seem more powerful and lighter than the Hope Minis that you were comparing them to a while back.

power should be the same between louise and martas
unless you are talking about the loiuse freeride with the 185 front rotor...

I did take a full front set of Martas and compare them to an Avid Ultimate lever/brake set with housing/cable (all parts needed for both)

the Marta was like .2 oz lighter
for a light disc setup my money would be on the Martas over the B4s and Minis

Power should be the sameeric wictor

but several tests have shown that (particularly in the wet) the standard Louise has a bit more power. I just wonder if I need that extra power (usually it's a 155lb rider with a 24lb bike, but I have situations where I may be carrying a 30lb backpack).

I've narrowed it down to Louises or Marthas, purely based on the fact that the feel of their levers suits my hands more, and the use mineral oil. The issue now is slightly lower weight of the extra stopping power on one- or twice-a-year trips. I don't know how much difference 30lb extra rider weight (backpacking throught the Alps is my plan) will make in terms of braking requirements. I thing the Martha is itself a nicer brake for my home conditions, but I'm afraid it may just miss a bit of bite and power for the foreign trips.

Power is one thing but how it used is another! maguras have loads of power but are way too sharp and uncontrollable. The hopes on the other hand are just sublime. Loads of powerr and immenantly controllable. The report is nads. sorry guys but it doesn't show jack!

Most people that have actually used both the new Maguras and newer Hopes will tell you that they are actually the BEST modulated disc brakes! It's the Hayes brakes that are the worst for that "on-off" feeling from my experience. I don't know what Maguras you used, but that's a very uninformed statement about their XC disc brakes.

I've been told the standard Louise modulates a little bit less than the Martha.
