Replace SID with what?(5 posts)

Replace SID with what?Dan Q

I have had a 2001 SID SL for the last year and have never liked it. It constantly needs work to keep it working ok and is very flexy. I just sent it back for an overhaul and new bushings and am planning on selling it upon its return. Any reccomendations for my new fork? I want something that is less flexy, requires less maintenance, has about 80mm of travel, and is still relatively lightweight. I am willing to trade some weight for better performance.
Some suggestions...AZ X-Racer

Marzocchi Marathon, Manitou Mars/Mars Super, Manitou Black Elite Air.

These forks will all be stiffer than the SID SL and the Mars forks will be in the same weight range. If you get the Mars and weigh over 140 pounds, you may want to order the stiffer spring with it from Answer. Th Black is the stiffest of these forks, but may be the heaviest at nearly 3.5lbs. No lockout is standard, but there will be one available in March. I went from using RS Judys and a SID XC to a Mars-1 (older version) and really saw the benefits. If I were a racer today, I still think I would forgo the RS SID Race and SL for a Manitou Mars Super or Black Elite Air with lockout just for the confidence they inspire, despite the weight difference. I'd look for another area to save that weight...

One of the biggest reason for my choice of Manitou is the easy lubing via grease ports on the back of the lower leg assembly.

I haven't ridden one, but everything I hear and read is positive. There are a number of options such as rebound, compression, lockout and anywhere in between, as well as blow out adjustability. I think that they weigh more than 3.5lbs but you just asked for more performance in place of weight. These are also super stiff unlike the sid.
