| florida trails wet? | jasonmb Jan 15, 2002 10:38 AM | | This is a pretty general question, but maybe somebody has some sort of idea.
I have been planning a MTB trip to florida for a few weeks now. My pal just got a new MTB and with cheap tickets through southwest i couldnt pass up a long weekend.
I spoke to my friend in florida yesterday and he says its pouring rain, expected to stop today. We were planning on riding thur - sunday in and around orlando.(Reddick? TOE...he named of a few that we were going to) Will the trails be open? In TN they close them down when wet and muddy.. didnt know if Florida soil dries out quickly :)
Any thoughts...? |
| Can't tell you about Reddick but here in Miami... | DIRT BOY Jan 15, 2002 12:29 PM | | the perks never close during rain. go to http://www.goneriding.com/RB.htm and get a map for reddick. You can call the local hotels and get some info on weather. I think there is a way to get a hold of someone atgone riding who can tell you if trails will be closed. I really doubt it. Send them a e-mail about it. Look this is Florida (swampland)where we get alot of rain. They terrian up there good get a little nasty. Central Florida has alot of orange clay (baseball dirt) that can get yucky! But if I remember reddick is more dirt. You should be fine and dirty!

| FYI | ARL Jan 15, 2002 7:49 PM | | Just so you know, Reddick is not open during the week. After a good rain, there are parts of Reddick that are unrideable. Because of the clay. The parks do not close because of rain though. You should still be able to find some good riding, as long as it doesn't keep raining. |
| Was just there last weekend | matt Jan 15, 2002 8:19 PM | | Living in the panhandle of Florida puts Ocala about 5 hours away, but it is some of the best riding in Florida. Reddick is a great place to ride. They have a well laid out trail system. The long loop is 10 miles, the short loop is 6 miles. I didn't see what part of the country you are from, but the trails in the area are products of strip mining in the area. They are for the most part very tight singletrack, with short but steep dropins and climb outs. The long loop is an excellent ride for the day. It starts and ends at the parking lot, so after a few laps you can grab some lunch and ride again. Short tread tires are perfect for the terrain(Pythons, Twister Pro's...) This trail isn't sandy like you would picture Florida being. The trails have great drainage, so they are very ridable the day after rain, and actually perfect a couple days later. If you go to www.goneriding.com click on the race links, they will give you driving directions to Reddick, and my sons favorite trail at Santos. You can actually get great directions to it from the tail review section on this site. Santos Trails isn't as much a race course in my opinion, but a great place to ride none the less. They have very well marked trails that are open and free 7 days a week. There is probably 15 miles of fast single track loops, and two quaries with excellent technical trails the encircle them on the rim. I have ridden around the country a lot, and the quarry trails match the best the country has to offer in my opinion. If you close your eyes and picture in your mind the same trail minus all the foliage, and smoothe rocks instead of the jagged quarry rock, you can even see bits of Moab. |
