| What Lightweight Stem? | Adam M. Jaffe Jan 15, 2002 1:14 PM | | I have a fuel 100 and I am attempting to lighten up the front end. I have already swapped out the Bontrager RL (Claimed weight 149g Actual weight: 165g)handlebar for an Easton Monkey Lite(150g, 155g)but don't want a flat bar. I decided to lighten the stem. I currently have a Bontranger RL (105mm,7degrees)I want one about the same size or a little smaller. I am 6'2 150Lbs and ride mostly XC in NE PA. I dont wan't to sacrifice too much strength for too much weight savings(I've seen <100g stems), but would like to lighten my current one. |

| not superlight but durable and sweet...THOMSON.. | berni Jan 16, 2002 2:44 AM | | I know I could get a stem 50g lighter, but for me the Thomson just looks so right, and is so well made that even for a committed weight weenie, it's worth it. |
| Agreed. And only $45 or so too. | fonseca Jan 16, 2002 2:12 PM | | I paid $41 for mine on ebay. There are a few sellers who sell lots of thomson products. The seatposts have gone as cheaply as $35 as well. They are perfectly machined and their extra weight means never having to worry if you might break them while riding. The other stems posted here are beautiful, but I think the dollar to weight ratio is high. I personally will never use a stem where the clamp bolts are sticking out like on the moots, kalloy, titec ti and ritchey stems...the few grams saved are not worth the extreme pain of slamming a kneecap into those protruding bolts. I still have scarred kneecaps from that happening years ago. :) |
| not superlight but durable and sweet...new Moots Ti-Beam | SS_MB-7 Jan 16, 2002 5:07 AM | | Here's the new Moots Ti-Beam stem - 120x6 = 184g (actual weight on a digital scale with all bolts):

| If you liked that one . . . | pedalAZ Jan 16, 2002 9:35 AM | | Titus Titanium stem, made to order, any length and rise. 135 mm weighs only 145 grams! Check out the internal fastening design at the steerer tube. Yummy. A mere $295. |
| I like it....except... | SS_MB-7 Jan 16, 2002 11:14 AM | | It's a beautiful stem, although I prefer the finish of the Moots, except that it does not have a removeable face-plate. I use a Monkey Lite low-rise bar and trying to squeeze into a non-removeable face-plate stem is a b*tch! Ride Hard, Mike B. |

| Same problem | Coolhand Jan 16, 2002 12:27 PM | | I use the monkey light. But the Seven stem on my roadie is a thing of beauty.

| Stem | scream5204 Jan 15, 2002 1:40 PM | | depending on how much you money you want to spend....anywehre from a Ritchey WCS stem..to a Titanium Stem from Titec. Both are strong. Dont go for anything under 130g or so....there are exotic eropean stems as well such as FRM, EXTRALITE...etc. I have a Ti stem and love it. (140g) but it's expensive. |
| This lightweight stem | pedalAZ Jan 15, 2002 2:00 PM | | Adam, you are in luck. Titec has a new "Fast AL" stem for exactly the mission you describe, weighing in at a mere 160 grams and easy on the wallet at $85.95. From Titec:
"Racers & weight freaks, listen up: Our new Fast AL is the ultimate aluminum stem, period.
The svelte and sleek single bolt steerer clamp and dual-bolt Kick-Back cut-out bar clamp provide viciously secure connections on both ends, welded to the lightest, narrowest extension we could design without sacrificing strength or stiffness.
Simplicity, performance, and absolutely no useless little frills. See you on the podium."
IMHO, this is no DH or FR stem. But for a 150lb XC rider, it may be what you are looking for. |
| $86 is easy on who's wallet ?! | DeeEight Jan 15, 2002 2:02 PM | | You guys need to shop around more when it comes to stems. Kalloy makes some nice forged stems in the 160-180g range that sell for about $10-20 usually. |
| $86 is easy on who's wallet ?! | pedalAZ Jan 15, 2002 2:21 PM | | OK, so Kalloy has a large selection of stems, some of which are light. They are a bit hard to find. I couldn't find this one for sale, but thought 149 grams looked pretty good.
It is easy to find a 185-200 gram stem for $25-$50, but the ones legitimately under 185 grams that are structurally sound are a very short list.
$85 is easy on the wallet compared to the titanium suggestions in the earlier post.
Gee, I guess I've made it on this forum, having been flamed by DeeEight. |

| One more option at or under 140 grams | pedalAZ Jan 16, 2002 11:03 AM | | I had forgotten about the Ritchey Logic WCS Mountain Stem. Ritchey claims it is only 125 grams, but Speedgoat and Weight Weenies list it at 140. Speedgoat sells it for $90, shipped. It is for lightweight XC riders only, but Adam claims only 150lbs (on 6'2"!!). |
| The Ritchey WCS sounds nice... | Adam Jan 16, 2002 7:16 PM | | I couldn't find it until now, I am shying away from Ti because of cost. They were mostly over 200 beans and I'm planning a Cancun spring break. The Ritchey is <100 and worth a try I wonder what MTBR says... |
