Anybody race with a rigid fork?(31 posts)

Anybody race with a rigid fork?daneil
Jan 16, 2002 10:15 AM
ok, 2 questions:

1. I'm thinking about racing xc (beginner, sport) in the north east (Plattekill etc...) next year, but i'm also thinking about dumping my 2000 Judy Race for a rigid fork. I don't really feel bothered by impacts, it's more or less the high frequency stuff that numbs my hands that bothers me. Any ideas on racing rigid.
2. I'd like to get a Morati Ti fork and maybe a ti or mg stem, but the Morati's are really expensive ($580) so if anybody has any ideas about a cheaper ti fork or maybe if somebody makes a carbon mtb fork? Thanks alot guys.

I race XC (Expert/Elite) on fairly technical, rocky and rooty singletrack with a Morati rigid Ti disc-only fork on my disc-only singlespeed. The first ride was a little jarring, but I've since adapted to it. I now find the bike much more maneuverable, nibble and agile.

Yes, Moratis are expensive, but just look at the construction and workmanship. Also, at 640g (1.41lbs) uncut, or 600g (1.32lbs) cut to 195mm, you'll drop at least 2 pounds off the front of your bike.

Yes, there are other made-in-Taiwan Morati-look-alike forks available. Check e-Bay.

As for a carbon fork, check out the Pace RC-31 @ www.pace-racing.co.uk. They will sell direct.

dude...seriously. Thats the best looking bike Ive seen in a while. Clean, understated, cookoo light but bombproof.

you need some ti bolts for the calipers/seat collar and an alum bolt for the stem - just to make it rustproof of course - cough cough.

Is that bottom bracket one of those rotating deals, to tighten the chain?

I might just send you 50 bucks to buy one of those King Ti water bottle cages - that would just about do it up right.

Yes, my frame uses an eccentric bottom bracket to accomodate chain tension and disc brakes. Sure, you can use horizontal dropouts and a disc adapter, but it's a b*tch!

As the name implies, it's a bottom bracket that rotates eccentrically in an oversized shell. It's been used for years in tandems to sync the timing chain.

I had Seven add one to my custom Ti disc-only singlespeed since I wanted to only use disc brakes and didn't want to worry about disc adapters, aligning the rear caliper/rotor, etc. The e-BB provides a clean solution in that, because it uses vertical dropouts, there is no fussing with disc adapters and aligning the rear caliper/rotor.

The only need for an e-BB is if you want discs. Also, your frame will require a new oversized BB shell to accomodate the e-BB.

My e-BB is made by Bushnell and it has been excellent through ~12 months of mud and now snow/ice.

BTW, I'll gladly take you up on your offer for a King Ti cage ;)

Yeah, it matches your frame, but why not go for the Tune bottle cage, 9 grams including the bolts! DJS was in on that discussion, too!

Imagine a Seven pictured with a Lightspeed. That's scandulous! And all that Titanium, it will put bike frame painters out of business. I've only been dreaming of having a Moriati for years. Ah well! Back to reality.

One day when I have the funds(many many years in the future ^_^ ), I will have an all ti singlespeed. EVERYTHING ti! Except the seat of course, but that will need to have ti rails of course. This is what I dream about at night! No paint anywhere, not even any decals...rims will have to be anodized grey, and the CK hubs and headset will have to be pewter. Oh yes...it will be mine.

I wonder if Mrazek will build me a ti version with an eccentric bb?

I recall he had a Racer X Ti with every imaginable part being ti, INCLUDING the saddle. I don't recall what the name of it was or even the model, but perhaps you can still find him out here in the net.

Man that thing is beautiful!!! I think that i'm definately going to go rigid, now i just need to choose carbon or ti. I can't afford the Morati, the cheapest i've found it is $579 at Cambria and that's way too much for a college senior like me. Maybe in a few years. Bascially i'm stuck with what i can get for the judy and maybe a little+ ($100 max). What do you think of the spicer fork? http://spicercycles.com/fork.html#titanfork
Otherwise have you heard anything about the Pace fork? it looks sweet and the price is right at $177usd, but there aren't even real pics of it. I don't know how i feel about that.
Thanks alot man. I appreciate it.
btw I have a ti frame (Svandik) and weigh about 160 (at least i do in the summer, not really right now.)

Daneil,

Hmmm, I don't know about that Ti Spicer fork. Something about it just looks off.

I have ridden the steel Spicer rigid disc-only fork (2.5lbs) though, and it is great!...and is for sale, if you are interested. It's 1-month old, disc-only and has a 195mm steerer. Make me an offer.

As for the Pace fork, I did email a couple owners and got mixed reviews. Some loved it and some were terrified by it. Go figure. In the end, I decided to go with the Morati.

If you are serious about the Morati fork, I can connect you with a source (100% legit) that can get it for you for much cheaper....$450US.

Mike B.

Mike,

Thanks for the offer, but i just bought a set of avid sd mag's so i can't use your fork. I'm gonna think about the Morati, that's a great price, but still up there. right now everything is pointing to the Pace fork, I've heard good things about their suspension designs, just nothing about the rigid. What looks off about the Spicer ti fork? just wondering because the price seems too good to be true, and in most cases that means it is. Just wondering what you noticed. Thanks.

I have a 585g (cut) Steinbach rigid fork. No disc mount. I don't know about the difference with carbon, ti or steel, but I like mine the way it rides, perhaps because I like my forks to be short-travel and non-sag.
The Steinbach (lightest version of two)is on my second (spare) VooDoo Bokor. Price should be around $130 or less.

Honestly, I prefer my new RS Psylo SL, adjustable 80-125mm of travel, and weighs in at 4.5lbs. BUT, I do ride one of these forks on my rigid bike, and they absorb vibrations pretty well. I dont ride that bike too much because I am no longer a true weight weenie, as I prefer the Freeride style of riding.

For a true report, contact Engleim (who sometimes visits this board). He has one, and rides the piss out of it. He says that he is suprised the ride is so good for the price, and he believes that they have approx 1-2mm vertical travel, while being decently stiff in lateral and torsional flex. He is even having me make up some alloy brake mounts for it so that it will bring down the weight more.

Rigid fork with a soft-tail?PT
Jan 16, 2002 4:10 PM
I have a moots YBB, and while I love it (and the whole softail concept) I long for the simplicity of my singlespeed on my best ride (the moots). While I'm too old and live at too high an elevation to push a single gear up the long alpine climbs, I have contemplated the addition of a rigid fork to my ride. Do you have an opinion on the feasibility/balance of a softail with a rigid fork?
I used to for a few seasons...DeeEight

back in the old days before suspension forks became commonplace. Lately i've been thinking of putting my FatChance BigOneInch fork back on the thunderbolt and converting it to a singlespeed to do some racing on.
PACE RECALL carbon forks!scant
Jan 16, 2002 3:13 PM
HI CREW
those pace rigid carbon blade forks were recalled in the UK months ago!! basically they're one weak fork. pace forks dont hav a particularly good rep in UK anymore. if you can find them for a cheaper price either go for the rc30, (rigid alu) or the even more obscure fat chance big 1 inch mentioned above. this is of course if u cant shell out for the moratis!

l8tz
Just to clarify...daneil
Jan 16, 2002 3:40 PM
the recall was because of a batch of faulty steerers. Of course RS has never had a recall, right? well just wanted to let everyone know. also all of the reviews that i've read on the pace carbon forks said that they were great.
Just to clarify...RaceyPace
Jan 17, 2002 1:04 PM
I think you'll probably find Pace have an excellent reputation in the U.K.
It's Rock Shox that have the less than admiral reputation.
Take it from me !!!!!!!!!!
