| Question for AZ X-Racer | wfl3 Jan 16, 2002 8:18 PM | | Did you have to cut down the lines on your Martas and if so was it a fairly easy job to trim them and then rebleed the system? Any info appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank |
| Yes, they had to be cut down... | AZ X-Racer Jan 16, 2002 8:46 PM | | The lines are very long at first. The person who sold them to me helped me out by cutting down the front one. I ended up bleeding them again. It is a VERY good idea to purchase the full Magura service kit that comes with Magura Blood brake fluid and all you need to do a full bleed job on both of your brakes. It costs just under $30.00 and should last you a while if you take care of everything. |
| If you're careful..... | Eric F Jan 16, 2002 10:33 PM | | You shouldn't *need* to rebleed them. I've done numerous hydro installs with Magura brakes and never have had to bleed them. Yes, it's all precautionary, but why not get everything installed and make sure there's no problems before you dump the money on the bleed kit? With Magura's bleeding them isn't "regular" maintanence. |
| He can try it but... | AZ X-Racer Jan 17, 2002 4:35 AM | | Even the tinyest bit of air will cause a sever power loss with the Marthas. It is a good idea to have the kit handy just in case. I don't have a local source for the kit or the Blood, so got one with the brakes and I did end up needing it. |
| He can try it but... | eric wictor Jan 17, 2002 4:54 AM | | Speaking of which, I was at the LBS yesterday molesting some Martas (which I find modulate very well), and there was oil bubbling up through one of the holes for the screws on the lever. I assume it hasn't been bled properly (or at all).
BTW, why are you posting at 5 A.M. in the morning? |
| LOL! :o)... | AZ X-Racer Jan 17, 2002 5:48 AM | | I'm a computer consultant and sometimes it's wise for me to go in early to make server changes well before people show up at their offices. I'm in the middle of such a job right now and have a bit of time to kill...
Yes, I would say that something was wrong with the bleed process that was performed on that Marta or the resevoir wasn't completely sealed. |
| Bubbling Martas | DJS Jan 17, 2002 6:06 AM | | the oil you see bubbling up throug the screw holes is because of excess oil.
Zip-tie the lever very tight to the handlebar, let sit overnight, and it should be fine in the morning. Ive done this on two sets of Martas.
The service guys and "disc experts" around here will tell you that it is hogwash and not going to work. Whatever. Just try it, it certainly cant hurt.
I had one set of Martas with a chronic soft lever feel. Bleeding 3 times (upside down, backwards, forwards, whatever) didnt help. Zip-tied to the bar overnight, Bingo! Fixed.
I guess its like the sugar-pill placebo effect or whatever. For some reason a sugar-pill placebo can cure some people's ache's and pains. Doctors say its impossible, but if the pain goes away, who is to say the sugar pill didnt work. knowhatimsaying? |
| Bubbling Martas | eric wictor Jan 19, 2002 7:53 AM | | Oh well, I've ordered my brakes and they're not Marthas. With all the calculating I've done, a pair of Louise brakes will only make my bike 23g heavier. Even it's a little more I think I'll be happier with the older lady. In al likelyhood I will be hauling about 30lbs of junk on my back this summer, so I'm going for a little extra durability. It may be overkill, but I don't want to find out the hard way. I've also noted than Marthas are showing a noticeable difference in dry/wet braking power. I don't liking riding in slop, but whatever time of year I plan my trips, it rains. So I'm not taking chances. When everything is here, I will post a full weight breakdown, if anybody is interested. |
| All being said, a decision you feel good about is often correct. | AZ X-Racer Jan 19, 2002 8:53 AM | | Post a pic and specs when you're done! |
