I've seen Icon Sterling road stems but I've got the opportunity to buy what is described as an MTB stem. Nothing on the Icon website (the website was discontinued). Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

back from when Icon USA was a seperate company and before they got bought out by Trek. The original Icon products were really well designed and manufactured, super lightweight aluminium parts. Like
140-180g Al threadless stems and 90-120g bar ends and so forth.
Not exactly, but...MantraMan

My 2000 Klein Mantra Comp came with a bunch of Icon "Graphite Series" components, including the stem, which seem to holding up quite well. I made some phone calls to try to get some info on Icon components, and here's the story, as well as I could piece it together: Icon used to make both road and mountain bike components. When they were bought by Trek in the late 90s, Trek phased them out of the market and refocused them as a road-only component supplier. From this (if it is in fact correct), we might deduce that if the stem is later than 1999-2000, it might well be a road stem.

I have a Sterling MTB stem on my hardtail that my lbs ordered for me two years ago. At the time it was the lightest stem I could find. Two years ago Trek owned Icon and produced a series of stems and other bike parts under the Icon name. As far as I know, the Sterling parts were the lightest. I do not recall the weight of the stem but it is something like 145 grams. It looks great and has not broken. The only down side is that it has no removeable face plate.
