Extralite crank question(19 posts)

Extralite crank questionTy

I have been ordering a replacment bike for a stolen Klein Adriot and have been doing this through my LBS.

They have told me they can get an Extralite crankset which apparently weighs 290 grams for the crank arms, the rings are not especially light so I would swop these out.

My questions are:

Has anyone heard of these Extralite cranks? I don't know anything about them other than they are black.

They are square taper so I would have to find a lightweight matching BB (possibly ti?), is it a bad move going back to square taper?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any info

Ty

PS I am going down to see them on monday (in 2 days) armed with my kitchen scales.
no way 280g...rather 450g...nino

OK I will check on monday, I thought it sounded too good to be true!

I will post the actual weight, after I have weighed them.

I did order some FSA Carbon Pros and a FRM Ti BB but would have to wait until late april to get them because of avalibility here in London. So I have had to rethink my crank/BB selection as I don't want to wait until then (I have only one bike).

So If the extralight turns out to be around 450g what other lightweight easily avalible crank/BB setups would people (and demon clary) recommend.

Thanks

Ty

these BikeTech/Stork cranks that Nino's mentioned from www.HiBike.de?

http://www.hibike.de/index.php3?arg_langID=2

I would personally go with a splined crank like the FSA or RaceFace Next with the money you have at your disposal. You are the one building up a new Klein right? You're bike is going to be incredibly light anyway. I would go with the lightest crank/BB combo you can get from manufacturers whos products and support you can trust and/or have experience with.
cheers for the suggestionTy

The problem is I am doing this through an Insurance claim which makes getting parts somewhat limited as I have to get everything through the shop, I can't use web sites, mail order etc, just their usual suppliers, which to their credit is quite broad.

I will suggest the BikeTech/Stork cranks to the guy sorting out my bike on monday, maybe they have dealt with them before.

I would prefer an ISIS BB, It was the thought of an Extralite 290g crank that led me astray.

So far I have settled on:

since it looks like you'll mainly be riding on the road, I'd get a SRAM PC89r chain. I'm actually using one out on my bike right now. We'll see if it lasts. You can also try a PC99--SRAM claims the same weight, but I'm not sure if that's accurate.

That's a cool looking combination. I don't know if you can tell, because the pic is a bit washed out, but my old aluminum bike in that picture of the bunnyhop I posted a few days ago was the same gold colour. It came stock that way.

Your bike will be a magnet for thieves though.
AZ-Racer.. I am using the PC-99 chain for 2 months now...DIRT BOY

yeh the pc89r chain holds up real well as well! i've been givin you a real hardtime on my tracer since may, (3 wks moab/ durango, 3months N.Zealand, 2months OZ) with no problems.
also works fine on 8spd, as i thinks its ment for 9spd??

when i lived in leatherhead (30 mile out from london) got a real good insurance deal from "just insurance" the underwriters being eagle star, i had to re do my house an contents but got my fat chance ti insured for 5k sterlin, for 158quid!

hope that helps

If you can shell out the cash. I have a pulse com right now and love it. Only 2.9lbs in small. I am either going to buy a Klein Adept FS or Attitude HT in the next couple of months. Also looking at a Suger 1 Or NRS Air

Almost identical technology to the CK, but cheaper and lighter.

If you use tubes for your Conti's, insert 20g of Tufo Sealent in each tube. Will save you a few dismounts, or else a little bit of air will seal minor punctures. I average about 30km per puncture on that tire without sealent...

I did a double take when I saw a picture of the Extralite cranks in their brochure because it does say 240g on the crank arm, however it also says 198g on the non-drive side so it is misleading. They had a set at CycleCare in High Wycombe and the looked ok but there are better cranks out there. I got stem, bar and seatpost from them all Extalite, very pleased. The bar is the new XC Ultra 580mm wide carbon with alloy inserts for stem and bar ends 108g.
That's just the crank arm's!Andystrike10

why not FRM Cranks /BB...?nino
Jan 19, 2002 1:24 PM
since you also want the stem then go ahead and order the crankset and ISIS BB too.

www.frmbike.com

ISIS crankset weighs 580g incl. fixing bolts
the ISIS BB weighs about 140g
by the way: the stem weighs 135g/120mm. (127g in Ti version with Ti bolts)
I would have to wait until late april to get them!Ty
