Explorer Pro/Stan's Blowouts??(4 posts)

Explorer Pro/Stan's Blowouts??NZMike

I have been using Stan's tubeless system in new Explorer Pros for a month or so. Last weekend I had BOTH tyres blow out within about an hour of each other in the middle of a 70km back country race. First the front went, I walked 4km to an aid station, got a replacement tyre, then about 10km's further on the rear went.

Both exploded with a loud bang, leaving about a 2 inch gash down the middle of the tyre. I sure I did not hit anything sharp, and there is no sign of anything cutting/digging into the tyres from the outside. In both cases the inside layers of threads in the tyre casing are completely unbroken, but delaminated from the rubber, ie. nothing has cut right through from the outside. Upon inspecting the inside of the tyres, there are other areas away from the blowouts where it looks like the inside of the rubber has 'dissolved' a bit, leaving exposed casing threads.

So apart from ruining my day, I can't work out what the @#$%^ has happened. If Stan's latex goo has dissolved the casing, I would have thought other people would have had the same problem by now. Or have I just got a dud set of tyres? (Explorer Pros are hard to get here in New Zealand, and cost me NZ$95.00 each, so I'm not very happy.)

Has anybody experienced anything similar?
Suggestions please.

Mike

Don't some or all Contis have natural rubber in them? I couldn't imagine that having anything to do with a latex interaction anyway. I've not used Contis in the latex setup, but I'd look more at a problem with the tires. Even extremely high pressure shouldn't have caused this kind of failure. You have a weird one. Maybe some other Conti users will have some ideas.

I ran Stans older system last year for a few months on the Explorer Pro and Twister Pro with no problems. 2 races were on rock garden styles courses as well.

somewhat rocky conditions. Larger riders. Not sure on pressures. Sidewalls seemed to blow out. Looked like a gunshot wound.
