UPDATE: GORE ULTRALIGHTS....SUCK.scream5204

Gore Ultralight Shift cables are crap. I had faith in them and they let me down...at least for the rear shifter. The front shifting is fine....however, if you look at the housing when I shift the rear derailleur, the housing moves and the shifting is off. It can't be fixed....can it? I use interloc (IRD) Metawire for my brakes. Those have worked FLAWLESSLY.
You're not setup correctly!!!!CODMAN

When setup properly, the only thing that moves is the cable!! The black sheath around the cable stays put!! Something is definetly wrong!

My first guess is that the sheath is going into the shifter mechanism (it has to stop just before entering!!). Another thing possible is that your steel cable is slightly splayed. Any steel fibers along that cable sticking out will grab against the black sheath (the one directly around the cable) and keep the steel cable from sliding smoothely inside the sheath. I repeat: the small black sheath should not move at all!!

Unfortunately, the instructions with these do suck. If you have more questions, just ask! I'll try to help!

the black housing IS moving though. if you look at my bike....I've attached a picture....everyplace that has housing leading from the shifter to the actual rear derailleur (3 separate places), the housing moves slightly...like it's not string enough to withstand the pressure. Is is possible that the housing isn't long enough between the joints? thanks

I installed a set a couple weeks ago and notice the housing had to be cut a tad longer than the previous as it seemed to shrink slightly when cut.
Just a thought.

Ok., lets get things straight here...CODMAN

and make sure we are talking about the same things! Because it could get confusing if we don,t use the right terms!

The Ultra lite shifting cables have 3 parts to them:
1- The steel cable
2- a Black (teflon I think) sheath that covers the steel cable on it's entire length. It's very thin, just a bit bigger than the cable itself. The cable is supposed to slip freely thourgh this sheath. The sheath should not move!!
3- A black housing just like any other shifter cable.

Now we got that straight, which part IS moving? The sheath? Or the housing?

The sheath that covers it (on mine) is not black. It's clear. and it IS very thin, just a bit bigger than the cable itself. the sheath is wrapped around the steel cable. (it's not supposed to move within the "sheath." as far as the housing, it makes noise when you bend it..like a fiber optic kind of sound...this "special housing" is what is so light that makes the cableset "ultralight" anyways, with that said, it's not the cable/sheath. it's the housing that's moving. thanks.
Alrighty, now we are getting somewhere!CODMAN

You hjust have a different color setup than mine. And by the way, there is fiber optics inside the housing!!

O.K., your cable housing shouldn't be moving! At least, no more than a regular cable housing!! Is it cut the right length? Since you have a hardtail (and a nice one at that!), the cable housing should be long enough to fit between the cable guides without making any sharp angles. But no longer than is necessary! Check to make sure yours isn't too long!

I've never really looked at my cables while shifting, so I wonder if a little moivement isn't normal? Under the tension the shifter applies to the cable? But not quite sure!

Appart from that, I can't see what is wrong! Like I said, once properly installed, only the steel cable should be moving! Nothing else! Well set up, shifting becomes buttery smooth; even in mud!

Sorry I can't do more for you!

Doesn't IRD have Metawire for shifters? (nm)pedalAZ
Mar 25, 2002 10:44 AM
yeah, but no one sells 'em. cambriabike.com only sells brake.scream5204

The outer housing is the same...shiggy
Mar 26, 2002 1:56 PM
...just use gear cables in it.
I hope that the inner housing for the slick cable is stronger...AZ-X

than the "meta-wire" outer stuff. The brake version that I got would flex MASSIVELY when I pulled on the brake levers. For braking, it's not so big a deal, but for shifting...
