Light Weight Tires??(2 posts)

Light Weight Tires??Adam
Mar 25, 2002 12:06 PM
hey, I have Mavic 517 wheels laced to Lx hubs with DT swiss spokes, the wheelset itself is very light, but Once my tires are on ( panaracer Fire XC pro) they feel really heavy, so I'm assuming my tires are the ones causing all this weight. Any suggestions on light but inexpensive tires??? also, how do you removes tires?
Thanks!
You need tire levers......truant8

like the ones in the picture. I always use tire levers to remove tires, but you could probably use some other piece of hard plastic. Bike shops should have cheap levers for you.

As far as lightweight, cheap tires....not sure what kind of tires for what kind of riding you're looking for. Those Fire XC pros are 570g. The grip is amazing. Any tire under 500g won't give you near the grip. I used Specialized Mt. Baldy and Dirt Control tires last year, 470g & 480g. But those were both $50. IRC Mythos are pretty grippy and very cheap, normally around $21-$25 and around 540g. Jenson's got 'em for $15. Jenson's also got Hutchinson Mosquito Airlights for $22 that weigh 480g. And Kenda Klimax Lites for $29 @ 345g. Cambria's got some fairly light, cheap ones I haven't tried before, too like Ritchey's ZED race for $19 that supposedly weigh 515g. Just look around on all the mailorder sites for deals and @ http://weightweenies.starbike.com/ for weights.
