| SRAM acquires ROCK SHOX...what do you think? | scream5204 Mar 25, 2002 6:09 PM | | I think it's going to be better for SRAM. they're an awesome company but have been pushed around too long by Shimano; now with the RS merge...they should be able to expand. |
| As far as I'm concerned... | POG Mar 25, 2002 7:11 PM | | they deserve each other - plastic crap that breaks. |
| whatever dude.... | scream5204 Mar 25, 2002 7:53 PM | | SRAM is a great company. Grip shift has never let me down and the "plastic" has never failed for me either. As far as RS goes, they're "plastic" stuff is also great. You can't expect an SUV to perform like a ferrari. They're not made for the same conditions. Just like a SID race is not going to perform like a Z1 Bomber. One's a lot lighter than the other, and so you just can't expect an extremely light fork to hold up like a bomber. It's all about the finesse. Plus, name a better chain than any of the PC-#9's they're the best designed chain ever; powerlink is awesome. |
| Where do you use the finesse? When you package it up to send.... | BIFF Mar 25, 2002 8:18 PM | | back to Rockshox for warranty? Or when youre flying down a rough trail and your front wheel wants to go somewhere other than where youre pointing it? Or when you get mad cause it breaks in 2 weeks and you have to be without a shock/fork for a 3 week turn around time? Please specify when to use finesse? Thanks. |
| LOL...plastic stuff that breaks. Agreed. | BIFF Mar 25, 2002 8:15 PM | | Kings of the plastic.
Id take a Shimano chain over a SRAM anyday, they just shift better, smoother, quieter and cleaner. And if youre a good mechanic who knows how to attach links properly it wont break on you.
SRAM chains are for the "not-so-good" mechanics. |
| Hmm... I've broken a couple of sets of XT shifters... | AZ-X Mar 25, 2002 9:08 PM | | one of which, unfortunately was not even on my bike; I've managed to kill LX, XT and even DX (back in the day)derailleurs, and I've snapped a pair of LX cranks in half. I've never once broken a SRAM chain and never once had a broken or damaged SRAM rear derailleur or shifter set. Dropped my bike of a ledge on Mt. Lemon, crashed several times in races and in training on rocky courses, had my bike just plain knocked over on its side into rocks and agains concrete floors, smacked my way through low shrubs and bushes, and snagged my rear triangle on tree branches with no problems since 1997 with SRAM derailleurs. Never had a problem. In my experience, they've been great and shifted much faster than their Shimano counterparts. I just wish they'd make a front derailleur to match the obvious engineering time that they've spent on the rear mechs--and a lighter cassette. I wouldn't have a Shimano part left on my bike.
Shifters... 3 or 4 moving parts vs. several more countless breakable parts in the Shimano rapidfires. When working in a shop that sold quite a bit of GripShift/SRAM stuff, we never saw anywhere near a matching percentage of broken SRAM parts as Shimano--ESPECIALLY chains and shifters--over a two year period.
Shimano has it's advantages for some but, as far as I've whitnessed, durability probably isn't really one of them.
As you can see from my bike, I like lightweight stuff, but I'm a pragmatist as well. I don't use stuff "just because it's lighter." There also isn't a single drilled out or "trimmed" item on my bike, yet it weighs less than 23lbs. I don't have the absolute lightest stuff out there, nor the weakest... I guess that's up to interpretation though... |
| AY YAY YAY!!!!!!!!! Please put that picture away! | Hector Ceasar Camacho Mar 25, 2002 9:19 PM | | Its burned an imprint in my mind. Please.
It weighs 23 on paper right? Big difference. |
| Wrong--it weighs less than 23lbs on paper. About 22.75 now...nm | AZ-X Mar 25, 2002 9:46 PM | | |
| Keep on postin your bike pic. | truant8 Mar 25, 2002 10:18 PM | | We all like to see eachother's bikes. And just because I saw somebody's bike a month ago doesn't mean I remember exactly what it looks like. So keep on postin'.
And 9.0SL is every bit XTR's equal. There really is no debate there anymore. I don't know why so many feel the need to bash Sram. I guess they wish we all had only one choice in componentry. You buy one XTR part and you almost have to buy the whole grupo.
9.0SL shifts flawlessly....all the time. I'll never say XTR is junk because I know it's not....I just prefer 9.0SL and more flexibilty in my compomemt spec.
As for Rock Shox.....I just got an 02 SID SL. I tried taking it apart and couldn't for fear of braking it. I guess I need a special tool. And what's this about bleeding the air in the cartridge? Man, Manitou was sooo easy. Grease ports and everything.
But that guy bashing the SID Race probably weighs 210lbs! Gimme a brake! |
| Just noticed his name's BIFF | truant8 Mar 25, 2002 10:27 PM | | The reason for the power link is that it saves your chain's integrity. Every time you brake your chain with a chain tool you widen the holes. And that's "not so good". |
| Man, I can't believe someone is coming on here with that crap... | AZ-X Mar 25, 2002 9:49 PM | | again... It looks like I really will have to provide a pic. It's all that will convince some people... |
| Unlike some people, I didn't take my part weights from a list on | AZ-X Mar 25, 2002 10:00 PM | | the Internet. I actually weighed every bit of the bike myself before assembly and took the time to point out to people on this forum a few parst that were both heavier and lighter than claimed. Do some searching if you really want to know... But, I'm sure you don't really. Just out to make your statement, right? |
| Unlike some people, I didn't take my part weights from a list on | mtc Mar 26, 2002 7:36 AM | | Man I wouldn't sweat it to much, he's just trolling. We all know your legit.
Its kinda like people always spouting off about the weight weenies bikes breaking. They'd probably freak out if the saw the way we abuse these "fragile" steads.
My.02 |
| true...true... | chrisJohn Mar 26, 2002 9:30 AM | | That's been my mileage with SRAM chains. Shimano have worked so much better for me. never had a link break after cleaning with a solvent, that's for sure. |
| re:K-Mart -Rock Shox it's all the same "customer service" "NOT" | Steve A Mar 26, 2002 10:58 AM | | NM |
| my only experience w/RS has been good | CKS Mar 28, 2002 8:37 AM | | My (admittedly limited) experience with RS's cust svc has been good. At Sea Otter, I took my brand new SID race to their mechanics, as there was something wrong with the bushings, (after 3 rides, not very impressive!!) and they gladly offered to rebuild the whole thing before my race that afternoon. I was most appreciative. |
| The "You Cant Polish a Turd" Analogy.. | Jrm Mar 27, 2002 7:46 AM | | Comes to mind. I hope they can survive on RS's existing OE market to stay alive until they make any improvements. |
