| ok guys its my MENTAL digi scales again and FSA stuff....... | marco righetti May 27, 2002 1:51 PM | | I've just had the FSA carbon chainset and ultimax extreme pro ti bb fitted today yeah!!! i physically weighed the fsa stuff and including the crank arm bolts it comes to 770 grms when i got home i weighed the xtr chainset and bb combo and it weighed exactly 900 grms so thats a saving of 130 grms! right! wrong!
when i had the xtr stuff on the bike the total weight was 22.85 lbs and what is the weight with the FSA stuff? you guessed it 22.85 lbs duuhh! these scales ARE MENTAL! anyway am i right in saying that 130 grms is about .3 of a lb? ie once you go passed .9 it then becomes a complete pound.
also on the inside of the non drive side crankarm where it meets the bb i can see the isis grooves,my friend at the local bike shop said that after every ride i should tighten the arms up until the arms go fully home, has anybody else had this problem? |
| Marco, it sounds like the scales you're using aren't.... | AZ-X May 27, 2002 2:10 PM | | very accurate... I would say that you are very likely correct in the savings of 130g and, yes, that is about 0.2866lbs (close enough!). Others have had this problem with an FSA ISIS arm not meeting the stop completely. That is the exact fix that FSA recommends. Also, make sure that you used a good amount of grease on the splines before mounting the crankarm. Go out and hammer it for a few miles (make sure it's secure!) and remove/retighten the arm after each ride for the next few days. If this doesn't work, contact FSA for help.
Good luck! Your bike is sounding VERY light for a Fuel at this point! Post a pic when you can... |
| hey az-x thanks for your advise................................. | marco righetti May 27, 2002 4:10 PM | | I normally let the bike shop guys deal with the bike but is it easy to remove the crankarm?the bolts which hold the arms to the bb are the ones which comes with the bb (alloy type) and not the self extracting ones which came with the chainset.
would you not need to lever the arm off?
what type of grease should i use? I have coppergrease and finishline white grease.
I'm assuming that the more i ride the more the isis grooves will become smoother allowing the arms to go more fully home?
I dont have a torque wrench so how much pressure should i use on the soft alloy bolts?
I think i should wait for the carbon rocker link to arrive before i take a photo.
would it be ok to rest the bolt area of the crankarm against wood and strike the other crankarm bolt area with the palm of my hand in order to bring the arm closer to the bb? |
| Mario... | AZ-X May 27, 2002 5:17 PM | | I would advise you to use a Park Tool CCP-4C crank puller. These are made for splined BBs and cranksets and will help with your issue. Your LBS SHOULD have one to help you with this operation. Sorry, but unless you buy one, you should probably take it back to the LBS after every ride this week to have the arm removed and reinstalled. I would not try any other method with a BB/crank like this one--especially after it has given so many people trouble already. Don't take any chances... |
| The crank & bb combo weights sound about right....... | wfl3 May 27, 2002 2:47 PM | | ...my fsa carbons & ti ultimax were 776gms. |
| re: ok guys its my MENTAL digi scales again and FSA stuff....... | tankhead10 May 27, 2002 4:37 PM | | hey marco,
My first ride on my FSA carbon crank/Isis ti bb was yesterday. My titanium bottom bracket loosened up after my second lap on this Sundays race course. I am going to have to return this to FSA but I am afraid I will not see one until 2004. So I just ordered the Shook bottom bracket. The non-driveside arm was extremely difficult to press into the isis bb. After I took them off to adjust the bb the first time they were easier and did go on to the stop that time. So the shop is probably right. Keep your eye on the bottom bracket. Oh by the way, my driveside carbon arm received a few nice scratches due to the deraileur kicking the chain off of the big ring. I hate when that happens. Good Luck. |
| hey tankhead10 about the non drive side crank arm..... | marco righetti May 28, 2002 5:26 AM | | can you tell me if the driveside crankarm was flush with the bb and how can you tell if the driveside arm is fully home with the chain rings sticking out towards the bb?
did you use the crank fixing bolts which came with the bb or the ones which came with the chainset? |
| hey tankhead10 about the non drive side crank arm..... | tankhead10 May 28, 2002 5:44 AM | | I could only use the bb bolts M14 the crankbolts are to large in diameter M15. I am not sure what you are asking me but I do know that I was able to get both arms to the stop on each side but it took three times to take off and reinstall to make it fit up to the stops. I hope this helps. |
