| Translator needed!! Nino ...? New 03 XTR crankset -80gr? | Batas May 28, 2002 2:08 AM | | Ok, there is a test on the german bike magazine of the 03 XTR but I don´t understand a thing of german! Can anyone translate that, just resume the test? I also saw on a french mag, "velo tout terrain", that the new XTR crankset will be 80gr lighter, can anyone confirm that? |
| Patience... | Cloxxki May 28, 2002 2:22 AM | | It won't be available to the public for some time anyway.
Where's that test to translate? Official Shimana weights suggest the whole group to lose about 400g, including the disc brakes, over the 2002 group. |
| yeap... | Batas May 28, 2002 2:37 AM | | The test is in that magazine, I didn´t purchased it, Nino should have an exampler. Patience, yes, but dreaming is soooo gooood.. ;) |
| here you go... | nino May 28, 2002 3:07 AM | | it is a exclusive 03 XTR test in german "BIKE" magazine. they included pictures of the movements needed to shift the new way as well as first impressions.no REA L weights yet!the weights were given by Shimano... by just watching the pictures i doubt that the new shifting will be any better.it`s too weird to get 2 fingers under the brake lever and push it upwards to upshift...downshifting is ok but either way braking AND shifting at the same time seems impossible.the needed movement to shift is bigger than that of today!shifting when out of the saddle or when hammering uphills holding thight to the handlebar makes for difficulties to shift at the same time...positive that now both sides have the same movement to get smaller or larger gears not as today where laft and right are different. anyway: the BB Crankset assembly looks impressive.the bearings are on the outside of the BB shellLtherefore they are farther apart and make for a stiffer combo. XTR cassettes are available in 11-32,11-34 and 12-34. total weight of the new XTR group is SAID TO BE 2688g (including discs) against 3129g (`02 with V`s).that`s 441g lighter.by replacing the XTR V`s on the `02 XTR with XT disc you would have an even bigger savings of 703g. upshifting the new way: see top left on how we are going to shift in the future.(sorry for the bad scan picture...there are more pictures if anyone is interested)

| Your the Man!! | Batas May 28, 2002 3:28 AM | | Thanks! |
| Your the Man!! | Cloxxki May 28, 2002 3:39 AM | | My colleague test-rode the XTR 03 group, at houffalize, on a parking lots, a pro's bike. Shifting is reportedly good and easy. |
| Nino, there must be something wrong there | eric wictor May 28, 2002 7:19 AM | | I saw little article in Mountain Bike Magazin (Mai). Roland Green had his say about the '03 gruppo, plus they had a picture of an STI lever with a little thumb paddle you push upwards. So what's this guy doing with his fingers under the brake lever. From what I understood from the other mag, you push down the brake lever to shift up, and press up the thumb paddle (like the current paddles, but turned 90° upwards) to downshift! |
| Your choice...Push with thumbs or two fingers. | Adam May 28, 2002 7:42 AM | | I think that originally Shimano was planning on only using the two finger method. Then they added the thumb thing probably because of the problem nino described. Either way, I'm excited to see the shifters, but even more excited to see the crank/BB. |
| That is an optional lever..Right Nino? | Batas May 28, 2002 7:45 AM | | You can downshift by two ways: Push down the brake lever OR press up the optional thumb paddle. |
| That is an optional lever..Right Nino? | Cloxxki May 28, 2002 7:57 AM | | Indeed, the thumblever is either optional or removable for weightweenies (us?). |
| How the hell wants to shift like that with MTB levers! | DIRT BOY May 28, 2002 9:01 AM | | downshifting seems ok but up shifting? I dont like using the tops of my fingers not up-shift. Works well on a road bike but MTB?
Yes the cranks/bb are sweet looking. Just when thinking of going ISIS Shimano pulls this out. BUT as much as I am a Shimano fan the lack in choices of BB and this new shifting might keep me away. Also I prefer Standard 46-48T rings over compact. |
| That.s...."Who the the hell" (nm) | DIRT BOY May 28, 2002 9:15 AM | | |
| you`re both right:it`s an optional thumb lever. (nm) | nino May 28, 2002 11:03 AM | | nm |
| Here's how to translate | dirtdad May 28, 2002 7:56 PM | | The online magazine is at http://www.bike-magazin.de
The 2003 XTR test is not yet on line. It is part of the June issue. Once it gets on line you can translate the page using something like
google's translator at:
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
I have read several european reviews in this way. IT is fun, because translation only works so well, and you can spot expressions and technical terms that don't translate well. |
