| What rings to mount on R/F (compact) cranks??? | farmer rick May 28, 2002 3:45 AM | | Are Specialties TA a good choice ? How does the shifting compare to Shimano ?. Looking at getting some new cranks (Its come down to Turbines or Next LP, does't look like FSA in ISIS will be imported here for a while yet, at least untill the local importer gets rid of their square taper stocks ) Any other 5 arm compact rings to consider?
BTW, the only Sugino stuff seen here in recent years is OEM.
Or do I get RF rings and grind the crap out of them to lighten them up, like nino does with his Suginos'?
Throw me some ideas.

| Many choices | eric wictor May 28, 2002 7:27 AM | | I have a RF Turbine crankset with TA rings. Shifting is on par with Shimano, IMHO. But there's a very big BUT: TA rings are thinner than RF of Shimano rings, so the spacing is off. You will need 0.5mm thick washers between the middle ring and the crank. You will also need 0.5mm washers between the granny and the crank, if you want everything perfect. To avoid having to find 0.5mm washers (if you do find them, PLEASE tell me, as not a shop in Europe has them!) - you can get RF rings. For all intents and purposes shifting is no worse, but the chainrings are significantly heavier. My RF crank with 44/32/20 TA rings and all steel hardware was 602g. With RF rings it will probably weigh in 40-50g more. |
| get Suginos... | nino May 28, 2002 11:32 AM | | lightweight and great shifting.I just gaot another set TODAY! they`re called "SUGINO SUPERSHIFTER CSP 3R" and come in a set of 3 rings (22-32-42).weights are 42: 64g 32: 34g 22: 44g (this one is steel so get another one out of Aluminium which will weigh about 21g) get the Suginos here: http://www.bikeman.com/shop/catring5894.html my square Race-Face Turbines fitted with these Suginos and Aluminium bolts (a MUST on RF cranks: saves as much as 50g alone!) weighed 561g inkl. crank fixing bolts (also Al,14g). here`s a detailed description on my LP`s: My LP`s: 547g ( 561g incl. Crank fixing bolts). Race-Face LP Crankarms 175mm: 422g Chainring bolts(all aluminum long inner+spacers+outer): 24g all 3 Chainrings: 101g 42t Sugino CSP 3 R (67g) filed to 57g 32t Sugino CSP 3 R (34g) filed/bored to 28g 20t Avitar 14g Crank fixing bolts: FRM aluminum 14g/pair Just for comparison: -Standard steel chainring bolts weighed 76g! -a complete XT chainring set weighs around 160g -a 44t XT chainring weighs 77g -a 32t XT weighs 45g -the standard steel 22t sugino weighs 44g and that`s what the LP`s looked like:
same setup here on my current Tune Bigfoot Crankset: 532g incl. crank fixing bolts.

| Keep in mind that Nino's Turbine LPs are not ISIS... | AZ-X May 29, 2002 12:37 AM | | so he does not require the larger crank fixing bolts, nor are his bolts the self-extracting type.
I've owned the Sugino Supershifter 3 rings before and I got the TAs this time because their quality, strength and stiffness is just head and shoulders above the Suginos (even though Eric Wictor is right about the spacing thing!). For many people, including myself, this is an issue worth consideration. The Suginos are stamped into shape from very thin aluminum, while the TAs are forged from 7075-T6 aluminum and then CNC machined. The TAs are much stronger and will last much longer than the Suginos. Nino hasn't reported any problems with his rings and has been using them, even "shaved," for years. Mine shifted fine too, but my big Sugino ring developed a hairline crack in it just from standard use--not from impact--before it wore out. That is the only chainring that I've ever owned that this has happened to. Maybe it was a fluke...
I have a 20t, and a 32t TA ring sitting in my parts bin that weigh 15g and 33g respectively without any "shaving" involved. A 42t TA will weigh about 68-72g. This is pretty comparable to the Suginos in stock form. Without the shaving, Nino's crankset with all bolts and crank fixing bolts would weigh 575g---597g if it were ISIS (which I prefer, having onwned 2 pairs of square tapered Turbine LPs on previous bikes).
I purchased my 44, 32 and 22t TA rings, among some other parts, from Cloxxki's shop: http://www.bike2build.nl . I got the 20t as part of the HiBike.de group order that KMan organized (he did a great job!). Bike2Build had excellent communication and VERY fast shipping. My order arrived here in Arizona from them within 6 business days of purchase. In contrast, HiBike.de took nearly 2 months to get us our parts, their communication via email was very poor and sporadic, and I will subsequently never order from them again...
I'm not trying to knock those with Sugino rings, I just wanted to give you some more info to work with. |
| thanks mate, sounds good re the TA rings... | farmer rick May 29, 2002 3:57 AM | | which are easy to get here in Oz (in stock at my LBS, which isn't really that local, more like 300km away..... Ahh , the joys of living in the bush, but they do give me great service and good prices ) .
Thanks, I do realise ninos cranks are/were square taper.
I'm with you on the spline/ISIS deal. I'm also more tempted by the Turbines than the Next, particularly when RF list the Turbines for XC and freeride, unlike the Next LP (OK, the cost thing is influencing me too ;^) )
Do you think I should wait and see how light the '03 XTR cranks will be (and how expensive!) before deciding??? or just go with the some Turbines, TA rings and a Shook/Am Classic BB? |
