Chain Reaction in Redwood City and Los Altos is decent: http://www.chainreaction.com/

Summit Bicycles in Berkeley, Burlingame, Los Gatos and San Rafael is also good: http://www.summitbicycles.com
Scratch that- much better recommendationCKS

Scratch that, those are both good shops, but they're pretty big.

Call Dan Smith at sportvelo: http://www.sportvelo.com/, 650.324.2453 He's an ex-professional wrench, who will give you service unlike you'll find anywhere else. He's in Menlo Park.

Not only will you save a lot of money, you will gain knowledge and save time when you know how to tune up or work on your own bike on the spot without having to drive it to the shop and wait.
I agree, but i do not...wirth

I agree, but i don't have all the tools to do a proper build job. But i had planned on asking th shop/ mechanic if i could watch so that i could learn more the process.
thanks

RBM Sports in South San Francisco(650) 869-5524 is known as a small, custom DH shop, but they have some of the best mechanics in the Bay Area. Most of their guys have wrenched professionally for sponsored teams (they have strong ties to Tomac), and they use all of the secret MTB-specific racing tweaks in their builds. Amazing wheel builders too. They laced a set for me over a year ago, and I haven't had to touch it up at all.
