| Anyone know true weight of the IRC Serac UST tires? | DIRT BOY May 28, 2002 5:20 PM | | Good tread pattern? Nice ride? size?
I have plenty in stock and was thinking of trying some.
Any Fire XC UST weights also? |
| Screw the weight, they suck to mount!!!!! | Big J May 28, 2002 8:30 PM | | I wanted to test a set out and tried to install them on a set of Bontrager Race Tubeless wheels. The bead is so huge that there is not enough room for it to settle into the channel, so you basicly have to mount it to the seat. It took me and another shop mechanic over an hour to mount one. The second was only slightly better but I could not get it to seal.
I grabbed a Kenda Kinetic and mounted it with no tools or trouble in about 45 seconds.
I wont run them. If I ever flatted I could no way get one back on out on the trail. We ended up using some DH levers.
I have been managing a high end shop for 4 years and a mechanic for 12. I have run Kendas, Michelins, Hutchinsons and Spec. UST tires and have never seen such a huge bead, the kenda is the polar opposite of the IRC.
My crude weighing and converting method has them at 745 grams, and my Comp S UST at 655g. Sorry, no digital scale at the house.
As far as ride, I don't like how they corner, when leaned over they have a distinct discrepancy between the straight line (center lugs)and leaned over (side lugs). When you lean it over it feels like you are going to just continue to wash, then it grabs, too late for me. It weighs the same as my Python and yet rolls like it weighs a 100g more.
Not sold. |

| Have you ridden both UST and NON? | Adam May 29, 2002 5:27 AM | | I was considering these Serac UST's until everyone started giving them bad reviews. Honestly, I haven't been able to find a Tire that handles the rocks and roots better than this one(The non UST). Have you ridden both? What terrain? Did IRC help you out with your problem? |
| Continental Vertical Pro | Vertical May 29, 2002 9:45 AM | | I hate to push these tires so much but I haven't yet found a flaw in them. They handle everything well, roots, loose soil, hardpack, even mud. I think the reason is that the 2.3 size lets it float more and they do measure at 2.25. |
| Screw the weight, they suck to mount!!!!! | Vaughn May 29, 2002 7:17 AM | | I have to agree with the ride description. They don't transition to turning very well unless you run the pressure 5psi lower than normal. They look like they would be great for gravel - NOT. They seem to roll pretty good. Their weights are from 690gm-725gm.
Mounting was not a problem with X-Max UST wheels. X-Max don't have the narrow channel at the valve stem like Bontrager. I have both sets of wheels. |
| I totally agree with that... | AZ-X May 29, 2002 10:10 AM | | assessment. If you do a searh for "Racer X Test Ride" you should find my comments on these tires that were mounted on the Racer X that I tested a few weeks ago. The areas I was riding in were covered in loose gravel over hardpack over several parts of the trail and I had to run the non-UST versions at VERY low pressure to get them not to break away and wash out unpredictably in the front. I think they would do much better in loamy soil to dry mud conditions. |
