| I did it again...my Dremel saved me 5g... | nino Aug 10, 2002 12:42 PM | | once again i couldn`t resist. I have a ITM Magnesium "the stem" on my roadbike.it had that awful golden colour that didn`t match my bikes colours so instead of just get it painted i first shaved off all sharp edges and this saved me 5g in the process.I will post pictures when i get it back painted black.
here`s the exact same stem of another swiss weight-weenie who inspired me.he even shaved the bolts...
and that`s how the ITM looks like in standard trim (pictured is a 120mm lenght):

| hey nino what would be the lightest weight of stem for a 220 lb | marco righetti Aug 10, 2002 2:38 PM | | rider?the extralite ultra stem ul with ti bolts @110 mm weighs 98 grms but costs £125! |
| really lightest? | nino Aug 10, 2002 10:01 PM | | well-then you won`t ask for a cheap one, right? -the EXTRALITE Ultrastem is the lightest for MTB. -the ITM "the stem" out of magnesium is the lightest for ROAD use.I know several guys who use the ITM also on the MTB but at your weight i had my doubts...if you don`t do any stunts and jumps go for it but it costs also a lot of money! the RITCHEY WCS has best weight/cost ratio! outfitted with Ti-bolts a 110mm weighs just 128g.(140g standard weight) you can get it for as low as 50 if you look around. |

| road stem fit mtb bar? does mtb stem fit road bar? | Thk Aug 11, 2002 10:21 PM | | just bought a Ritchey WCS mtb 100mm stem(136g non-ti 6 bolts) on sale $25 (reg price $89). Can I use the these mtb stem for my road bike? I was wondering since you said road stem are used on mtb, can mtb stem fit road bar?
Also, how much would you save if you dremel out a hole on your ITM front clamp like the one on WCS front clamp? |
| different handlebar diameter: road 26.0 / MTB 25.4mm.... | nino Aug 11, 2002 10:40 PM | | but in most cases this isn`t a problem. the ITM stem is out of magnesium which is brittle.so i guess making a hole would weaken the front plate too much.ITM designed that stem to be ultralight so i guess they had this thoights too.then there is also a different bolt pattern.the ITM; has only 2 bolts to take the load, the Ritchey has 4 bolts. |

| Picture of the finished 90mm ITM stem: 85g... | nino Aug 11, 2002 2:38 AM | | here it is,shaved and painted black back on the bike.I could have had it "kind of anodized" in black but that wouldn`t be as durable as the paint.it would have been about 2g lighter though... the 90mm now weighs just 85g (was 92g),the 100mm now weighs 93g (was 98g)

| cool-here`s another hot link...4.6 kilo / 10.1 lbs roadbike | nino Aug 11, 2002 7:06 AM | | I already mentioned that swiss guy named Sandro.well-he`s a real master in saving weight. Sandro Muras uphill roadbike weighs just 4610g / 10.163 lbs.it gets ridden every week.those who know about roadbike weights should go through the parts specs !you will be amazed at those weights.they are true.I have seen the bike stripped and could put several parts on the scale.one word: AMAZING!he machines/shaves just about every tiny part on his bike... I will be racing against him and his featherweight the next weekends.compared to his bike mine is like a tank (it weighs 6.3 kilos) http://www.geocities.com/murabicycle/Road.html

| A question... | fonseca Aug 11, 2002 11:34 AM | | By "uphill" road bike what exactly do you mean? That it can't be ridden downhill? |
| A question... | nino Aug 11, 2002 9:12 PM | | at such a weight anything above 40 miles might be scary...have you noticed the brakes weight? just 150g for the pair.I also have a set of those FRM brakes in my garage (they weigh 230g).but i don`t use them since they are too weak for high speeds...now figure! |
